In the Upper Bay of Fundy, the tidal range is incredible -- the difference in height from low to high tide is equivalent of a four story building. And all that water flows in just about six hours. Knowing whether the tide is coming in or out is essential to safely enjoy time on the shores. Check out the Tide charts for Albert County, NB. Story and picture by Paul Gaudet Spring has fully engaged (or at least I hope so by the time you read this) and we, at Hopewell Rocks, are reawakening our site for the coming season which starts Friday, May 17th at 9am. Look for our spring and autumn food-bank days when we collect dry goods or a monetary donation for the Shepody Food Bank in lieu of paying admission fees. These dates will be announced in the next month or so. Check out the Fundy Biosphere's story about incredible anemones and other strange life forms found at the lowest of low tides... www.fundy-biosphere.ca/en/news/alien-like-immortals-discovered-at-hopewell-rocks.html

Story and images by Kevin Snair When I ask the good folks of Albert County what the Hopewell Rocks means to them, the answers can be as varied as the people themselves. For some it’s just the photo on their Medicare card but for many, it’s a whole lot more. I often hear coming-of-age stories of youth experiencing their first summer jobs among excited travelers. I hear of church picnics and family gatherings outside the old Pavilion. For some it’s the draw that brings the guests to their bed & breakfasts and restaurants and for more than one, it’s memories of that first stolen kiss under Lover’s Arch. Undeniably, the Hopewell Rocks have found their way into the hearts of many New Brunswickers. On February 8th, 2015, Rick Flanagan, Kevin Snair and Pierre Desjardins donned their toques and down-filled jackets to head to the Hopewell Rocks to explore the iced-in shoreline dotted with growlers (small icebergs). The sun -- shining clear in a cobalt-blue sky -- belied the temperature: with windchill, it was -20 C. The guys spent three hours exploring the ice-crusted landscape. Kevin captured their adventure on the video below. |
