Image of Ala Iatenco. It just dawned upon me, “It has been five years since we moved to Elgin, NB and we don’t even know our neighbours well.” My husband and I, originally from Eastern Europe, immigrated to Canada after working for seven years in Maryland, USA. While in Canada, we had been so engrossed in our little world of work - homeschooling, gardening and day to day chores, that we became oblivious to our immediate community and the one at large. This is where I was led to join Elgin Women’s Institute, an organization where women are working for positive change including promoting community connections and cultural pride.
A Woman’s Walk to WI [the poem]
Out in the country, at the foot of the hill,
A woman toils in her garden with patience and skill.
She cares for her nest, and all seems just fine,
But something is missing, she cannot tell why.
She started her quest, at first, on her knees,
And looked to be a blessing with some sense of unease.
An Institute for Women she joined at last,
And O! This was it and what a Blast!
There was kindness and laughter, teamwork and planning,
With many events, fundraisers and learning.
Prejudice and fault-finding were absent there,
It all proved to be a great blessing – to her.
My appeal to you, women, young and old,
Is to welcome such a group into your fold.
Numerous benefits are there, all would agree,
“For Home and Country” and for thee.
