“Tall Trees & Fresh Fields”
The community project is a collaborative partnership between the Albert County Historical Society and the professional heritage actors and script writers of Character Matters Miramichi theatrical troupe. An entertaining Heritage Drama of professional quality will be produced and performed in Albert County community venues, portraying an important era of Albert County’s past … the bygone days of the lumbering industry with log crews, pike poles and river-dries and the past days of self-sufficient, family-run farms throughout the county.
The ACHS Heritage Project Committee was successful in receiving funding through the federal “New Horizons for Seniors Program,” to produce an entertaining, historically accurate, live performance drama for community audiences. It was essential for this community project to have local seniors actively involved by contributing historical and personal knowledge for the script writing, and/or providing musical talent or assistance at the performances.
Who?
The ACHS Heritage Project leaders, Dawne McLean and Sharon McIntyre, recruited senior volunteers from local communities to participate in the project. During scheduled group meetings and interviews with the Character Matters script writers, Tom Daley and Shawn McCarthy, the seniors shared personal memories, stories and experiences, as well as historical accounts passed down through the years in their families or the local community. The development and writing of the authentic drama script is based on the heritage knowledge, personal experiences and recollections of Albert County’s past as shared by the community seniors.

Benefits of the project?
There is a need in rural communities to promote opportunities for older people to contribute their knowledge, their skills, their talents and experience. What better way to stir interest in communities learning more about their local history than to enjoy a live performance that takes you back in time! If the rich history of Albert County is not preserved, it will be lost for future generations.
