The Curryville Community Centre, located at 786 Albert Mines Road, is a non profit organization under the direction of 7 Board members. Our facility has a large stage with a sound system and seating for approximately 70 guests on the upper level. Our lower level includes a kitchen , 2 washrooms and finished basement with capacity for another 30-40 people. The Centre has always been a pillar of the community and has a long history.
Originally the building house the Curryville Methodist Church, which later became the Curryville United Church in 1905. They were part of a three point charge including Hillsborough and Hopewell Cape.
The corner stone was laid in July 19th 1905. The existing building that we have now, was replacing an older church that was partially burned and located where the Curryville Cemetery is. The first church, was built in 1855 which means that the community has had a church for 170 years.
The Church was decommissioned in 2005 and became the incorporated Curryville Community Outreach Centre in 2007.
During the renovations of the sanctuary, we decided to removes the pews to open up the space for various community activities. Originally, the seating for the Sunday School children was a couple of front pews on the right hand side. There were holes /or notches made for attaching the pews to the wall. In there they found coins that were meant for the church offering and were accidentally lost!
Like tiny Time Capsules, the coins remind us of the past. One was an English one penny coin dating back to 1897, a precious reminder of the generations that attended the church. It will be framed and place on the wall and be part of our anniversary celebration!
We’re now celebrating 170 Anniversary of the original Methodist Church and the 120th Anniversary of the second building of the Curryville Methodist Hospital Church.
Which brings us to the exciting News!
We’re planning an “ Old Time Sunday School Reunion” at the Curryville Community Centre. We’re calling all kids from days gone by! Bring your photos and all your family - grandkids, great great grandkids, and any friends that would like to take a walk down memory lane with us!
