This image is especially close to my heart because I created it right here, in Albert County. I began planning this image the first time I had the chance to photograph the amazing Aurora Borealis in May 2024. I kept thinking about how I could get a dog into the scene, but my own are too tiny and ill-behaved to make good models.
We needed a location where I could get down low and shoot up towards Jewell, with the Aurora behind her, so we headed for Cape Enrage. After first trying out the deck at the top of the road, we ended up heading back down to the pebble beach, where I was able to create this silhouette. It was not without its challenges, since I needed about a two-second exposure time and Jewell was understandably disinclined to stay perfectly still for that long!
In the end, we got a few usable shots (out of hundreds!), and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
