There’s something fishy happening up here on the hill. But no worries. It’s all good!
We are so excited about the success of Albert Career Development Centre (ACDC) Aquaponic Social Enterprise!! What, you may ask, is Aquaponics? Briefly, it is a system that combines aquaculture (raising fish in tanks) with hydroponics (growing plants in water) in a harmonious environment. It is completely organic in nature, uses relatively little water and no soil. Which makes it a remarkably quick and dependable way to grow produce.
Located in Hopewell Hill in the basement of our office building, 5295 route 114, we have two complete aquaponic systems operating. Each of our systems has a large fish tank with brook trout. The nutrient rich water from each tank is pumped to the grow bed to feed plants. This cycle is continuous and results in happy, quickly growing, fish and yummy nutritious produce.
It has been a learning process and there has been much trial and error along the way.
We are still experimenting with products / produce we would like to offer for purchase.
To date we have offered lettuce and bok choy for sale. At the moment we have Tiny Tim tomatoes ripening on the vine. Our long term goal is to have a continuous supply of produce available for purchase. Especially during winter months when fresh produce is harder, if not impossible, to find.
We welcome visitors to come see our Aquaponic system. It really is impressive
