Mental Health Support Needed Following Losses

A 211 Service Navigator took a call from an adult male looking for assistance with his mental health. When she asked him about his situation, he expressed that he had lost people who were important to him lately; he was looking for grief support groups, counselling, and possibly medication. When she probed further, she learned that the caller currently did not have a family doctor.

The Service Navigator extended her condolences to the caller and let him know that there were agencies that could help him to get through this difficult time. She let him know about the services of the Compassionate Grief Centre, which offers individual and group sessions. He could even join a virtual group if he was more comfortable with that. She also encouraged the caller to contact his local community mental health centre and made sure that he had the contact information for that.

Productive conversations can help inform our community leaders of issues they might not realize exist in their communities. When done right, these discussions can be helpful and informative and can bring people together on a common goal.

Expressing your concerns in a respectful way, via meetings, calls or letters to your elected officials, helps them to understand the needs in their community and they can use this information when deciding how and when to fund projects. They need this information as much as you need to be heard. Here are some ways you can engage with officials in your area:

What if there Were No Women's Institutes? Part 1

I am writing this short series of articles mostly because I am a Women’s Institute (WI) member and because there is great value for women to join and belong to something greater than yourself….to help sisters in the community. I have only been a member for about 5 years, but I think WI is in my DNA. My mother probably took me to my first meeting when I was a baby. In those days, children were not left home with an expensive babysitter, and women loved the community of a group of like-minded women. The idea of the non-existence WI’s in Canada came to me when I think of what the group of women who make up my local WI mean to me. What if WI never existed?

In imagining a Canada without Women’s Institutes, I am reminded of the importance of collaboration, of home and family education, and the empowerment of women everywhere. In examining the legacy of WIs, I realize that it is a testament to what can be achieved when individuals come together with a shared purpose. Their absence would leave an undeniable void, underscoring their vital contributions to Canadian – in our case, New Brunswick society.

Summer Camp Underway at Pointe Taken Dance

Pointe Taken Dance has officially kicked off its summer camp season, and there’s still time to register! The camp is open to children ages five and up and welcomes all experience levels.

Campers will explore a variety of creative disciplines, including dance, music, visual art, and drama, in a supportive and fun environment. It’s an excellent opportunity for young artists to build confidence, make new friends, and express themselves through the arts.

Summer dance camps provide an invaluable opportunity for kids to step away from screens, stay active, and explore their creativity. These camps foster teamwork, resilience, and independence, allowing campers to form lasting friendships and create unforgettable memories. By joining a summer arts camp, children not only improve their dance skills but also develop essential life skills that will stay with them long after the music stops.

Already away for the summer but want to stay in the loop? Pointe Taken Dance is excited to offer dance classes for the 2025-2026 year. Locations will be the William Henry Steeves House and the Alma Rink. Early registration will open to families who were enrolled in the Spring Semester, with public registration to follow in the coming weeks. For more than 57 years, the New Brunswick Senior Citizens’ Federation (NBSCF) has stood as the steadfast voice of older adults across the province. From humble beginnings to a province-wide network representing thousands of members, the Federation has never wavered in its commitment to protect the rights of seniors, demand fair treatment, and ensure that the contributions of older New Brunswickers are respected and valued.

Behind every resolution passed at our Annual General Meetings, every petition circulated, every meeting with elected officials, and every conversation with frontline service providers is a clear and unwavering purpose: to create a province where seniors can age with dignity, security, and independence. Our work is not just about defending what exists—it’s about building a better future.

Every Monday and Wednesday morning, Valley Baptist Church in Edgett’s Landing bustles with activity as seniors gather for Nursing Homes Without Walls (NHWW). The coffee’s on, plates are filled with healthy treats, and conversation flows alongside upbeat tunes like Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl.

Funded by New Brunswick Social Development, and delivered through Forest Dale Nursing Home, NHWW supports healthy aging at home by fostering social interaction, encouraging physical activity and assisting seniors access necessary services. Fundy-Albert’s program, led by Shelly McNaught, launched in March 2024 and has grown into a thriving community with 372 participants.
