Fundy Curling Club is in Full Swing!

Before sliding into the January on ice action at the Fundy Curling Club let’s take a look back at what has been a very busy start to the curling season.

Kicking things off we had eleven brand new curlers enrol in our Adult Learn to Curl program that took place over 3 evenings. I am sure they spent the holiday’s educating their family and friends on all the new curling terms they learned. Little did they know that hog line, hack, T line and out turn would be topics of conversation. Hopefully our fearless participants did not wear out their socks practising their slides in the living room. Thanks for taking part and we look forward to making you feel at home at the club as you enter league play in 2026!

Our youth coaches and Riverside School kids also had a fantastic time in our School Learn to Curl program. The partnership between the FCC and Riverside School started many years ago and continues to grow each year. Curling is much more than just about the game as it also teaches discipline, good sportsmanship and positive social interaction. It really is a game that can last a lifetime. Two days were spent in the gym with our indoor floor curl sets allowing everyone to get the hang of the game in a nice warm environment. The following week all the kids had a chance to participate in an on ice session to put their newly learned skills into action. Spectacular slides, great shots and smiles all around made for a couple of memorable days. Many of these kids are now enrolled in our Little Rocks Program and we can’t wait to kick of the season when the kids take over the ice starting on January 4th. A huge thank you to the school staff for helping us spread the word about the club!

Now that January has arrived everyone is excited as our regular league play is about to ramp up. Whether it is our mixed recreational evenings, ladies night or our competitive league there is something for everyone’s ability at a price that can’t be beat. At the time of writing the Ace of Spades was still in hiding at our Friday night Chase the Ace fundraiser. This is a great evening for community members to come out to mingle at the club and watch some of the curling games while waiting for the lucky ticket to be drawn. Wellness on Wheels: Bringing Mental Health Resources to Rural Albert County

In rural communities, support often looks different than it does in urban areas. Wellness on Wheels was created to act as a bridge to mental health services, with a simple but powerful goal: to meet people where they are and make wellness supports visible, accessible, and community driven.

Wellness on Wheels is a community wellness initiative launched in Albert County in September 2025 that installs small, publicly accessible free wellness boxes in familiar community spaces. These boxes are stocked with free mental health resources, hygiene items, and coping tools that individuals can access discreetly and without barriers. The boxes are currently located at the Hillsborough Public Library and Caledonia Regional High School. There are also ongoing mental health workshops and events happening at schools throughout the county.

A 211 caller told a Service Navigator they were feeling suicidal, but reported no current intent or plan to act. They disclosed that they had a history of suicide attempts, but stated they did not have the means available at the time of the call. The caller also reported that they did not have food and expressed that they were feeling hungry and weak. They requested in-person wellness checks or friendly outreach for support.

New Year's resolutions do not usually last. It is best to start out mindful of needing to make some changes and using small steps to make them attainable.

Nutrition and Diet

Eat whole foods - Add fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grain. They provide essential nutrients and help manage weight and blood sugar.
Prioritize protein (poultry, fish, legumes) for stable energy and fibre (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) for gut health and fullness.
Stay hydrated - Aim for sufficient water intake throughout the day, keeping a glass handy.
Plan ahead - Meal prep and plan snacks to make healthier choices easier and reduce last minute stress. Reduce processed foods and sugary drinks.
