Every day in rural New Brunswick, seniors and low‑income families face a simple but critical barrier: getting to medical appointments, dialysis treatments, and the food bank. Urban/Rural Rides is a volunteer‑powered charity that closes this gap by providing safe, affordable, reliable rides where public transit doesn’t reach. By becoming a volunteer driver, you don’t just give someone a lift—you help preserve their independence, health, and connection to community.

Every meaningful journey starts with someone saying yes — yes to helping, yes to making a difference. At Urban/Rural Rides, that’s exactly what our volunteers have done. They’ve stepped up, taken the wheel, and helped people get where need to go — whether it’s to the doctor, the grocery store, or just out and about in their community again.

As our program continues to grow, we’re taking a moment to recognize some truly special folks — longtime volunteers who are now retiring after years of giving their time, kindness, and care.

Support for Seniors in the Community

Do you know a senior in our community that could use some support? 
As we move through the fall season, please take a moment to reflect on the seniors in our community. When you think about your elderly neighbor, friend or family member ask yourself if they seem okay? Do they need anything? If you think there is a need, reach out to the team at Forest Dale Home Inc. We have heard numerous stories about seniors in need, some examples are;

An older farmer that avoids the stairs in his home because of bad knees. This means he can’t bathe in the only full washroom (on the 2nd level) in his home, so he resorts to a sponge bath in the main level half bath or kitchen.
A senior couple having a hard time paying their oil bill in the fall / winter, so they spend less on groceries. They end up eating more processed foods versus nutritious food.
An individual’s family has moved away, and they have no mode of transportation. Because of this they don’t have regular access to hair care, foot care or dental hygiene.

Some seniors have no family in the area and / or their spouse may have passed. This can lead to feelings of loneliness or social isolation and possibly depression. There are more examples but with this article we wanted to highlight a few to get you thinking.

Footloose in Albert County

The original Footloose Program was a catalyst that brought Albert County together in its quest for moving more, improving health and changing habits. The community gathered, rallied and encouraged each other to reach their goals. Focusing on health changes on our own can be overwhelming. But, if you want to go far, go together!

Our goal with Footloose 2023 is to bring our community together once again - working towards a common goal, having fun and, let’s face it - Who doesn’t like a little friendly competition?

ParticiPACTION Month

June is ParticipACTION month, and Albert County is getting active! While that’s a great reward all on its own, your active minutes can help our community win a $100,000 prize! Communities all across the country are tracking their activity during the month of June, and the most active will have an opportunity to win the grand prize.

ParticipACTION Makes Community Better Challenge 2022

Spring is coming and that means summer is quick to follow. Isn’t that exciting!? It also means that ParticipACTION is launching its Canada-wide Community Better Challenge in the search for Canada’s more active community! Not only does the winning community get the honour of being crowned most active, but also it wins $100,000 for the community. In addition, there are prizes for the most active community in each province. Let’s show them what Albert County is made of!

“At first, it was really scary,” says Beverly Stevens. “So much was unknown.”

When Horizon Health Network asked for nurses to help with COVID-19 testing, she and Anne Terris immediately offered to go. They were initially told they would be working at the Moncton testing site for a few weeks, then their term was extended another few weeks, and again and again. In the end, they conducted COVID tests from mid-April to December 2020.

BACH Golf Tournament 2017

June 17th marks the date of the 3rd Annual Bennett and Albert County Health Care (BACH) Foundation Golf Tournament. The focus of the day is “fun, friendship and charity,” according to Bob Rochon. Bob is a member of the BACH Board of Directors.

The tournament is a four-person scramble. In each team, all four players hit off the tee. The team then picks which ball to use for the next shot. The result is a focus on fun more than competition. As Bob says, “You don’t need to be a good golfer to enjoy a scramble, and on a par-3, anything is possible. With a bit of luck, even a mediocre golfer can do well.”

Tele-Drive to the Rescue!

It’s a long walk from our house to the nearest grocery store. It’s even longer for my preschooler’s wee little legs. Plus, I’m pregnant.

My spouse has to drive all over Canada for his job and can be gone for up to a month at a time, so when our second vehicle broke down without notice, things were grim. If he takes time off, there’s no extra cash to fix the car situation, and without him we’re walking.
