When life gets busy, it’s easy to put your own needs on the back burner. You might say “yes” when you really mean “no,” stretch yourself too thin, or ignore that quiet voice telling you to slow down. That’s where boundaries come in—not as walls, but as acts of kindness to yourself.
Setting boundaries is one of the most powerful ways to care for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Here's how: Submitted by: Brittany Butland Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy eating pattern will help you feel good, maintain your weight and meet your nutrient needs. Here are five tips to support your health through good nutrition: Eat a variety of healthy foods each day Fruits, vegetables, protein foods and whole grains are all part of a healthy eating pattern. Try to include all four food groups at each meal and two food groups at snacks. Eating a variety of foods will help you meet your nutrient needs. Fill up with fibre. A high-fibre diet can lower your risk of stroke, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. A high-fibre diet can also promote bowel regularity and keep you feeling full for longer. Fibre is found in vegetables, fruit, whole grains and plant-based proteins, such as chickpeas, lentils and nuts. Submitted by: Melody Land
Anyone can fall, but falls increase in likelihood and seriousness as we age. It is important to recognize that falls are NOT a normal part of ageing. They can be a sign of health concerns, issues, or illnesses. Falls should never be overlooked. Falls in older adults can lead to serious negative health outcomes and they are the leading cause of injury and hospitalization for older adults. Amy O'Keefe, Community Developer Submitted by: Amy O'Keefe [email protected] 506-229-2244 (call or texts welcome!) Last week, as I left my hotel room to attend a conference in Saint John, I approached the elevator as another woman also approached. “Good morning, did you have a good sleep?” I responded and paused for a minute – I can either engage, or stand here awkwardly, I thought. Then asked, “How about you?” and we got into the elevator and continued a chat about our plans for the day, and what we do for a living. That was nice, I thought. I should do that more often. The original Footloose Program was a catalyst that brought Albert County together in its quest for moving more, improving health and changing habits. The community gathered, rallied and encouraged each other to reach their goals. Focusing on health changes on our own can be overwhelming. But, if you want to go far, go together!
Our goal with Footloose 2023 is to bring our community together once again - working towards a common goal, having fun and, let’s face it - Who doesn’t like a little friendly competition? Seniors addiction and mental health care is an issue that concerns many New Brunswickers. The NB Department of Health, Addictions and Mental Health Services Branch, is conducting a scan of existing mental health and addict ion resources available to support New Brunswick seniors. A scan of seniors programs in Canada and other jurisdictions identified by the Branch is also being undertaken to identify benchmarks and best practices. This research will help to uncover potential opportunities for New Brunswick to make changes and/or improve available resources.
The Branch wants to ensure that it receives input from as many people as possible. A brief (10 minute) survey has been developed to collect this information. The survey will be open from December 6, 2022 to January 6, 2023 for input. This is the link to take the survey: Click here for the survey in English New Brunswick Seniors' Addict ion and Mental Health Program s Survey for the Community (survey monkey.com ) Please take a few minutes to check the online publication and respond t o t he survey to give your perspective. Results of this research will inform the development of future programs and resources in New Brunswick for seniors with mental health or addiction needs. We will keep you apprised of progress and our findings. By Janet Wallace “At first, it was really scary,” says Beverly Stevens. “So much was unknown.” When Horizon Health Network asked for nurses to help with COVID-19 testing, she and Anne Terris immediately offered to go. They were initially told they would be working at the Moncton testing site for a few weeks, then their term was extended another few weeks, and again and again. In the end, they conducted COVID tests from mid-April to December 2020. By Janet Wallace For young adults struggling with drug addiction, it may be hard to know where to go or who to ask for help. Fortunately, there is an option that is free and convenient: Youth Impact offers one-on-one addiction counselling. With the support of the Bennett and Albert County Health Care (BACH) Foundation, the program is now expanding into rural Albert County. The Drug Intervention Program is available for anyone from 15-24 years of age. There is no cost for the program and no waiting list. It is completely confidential and voluntary. It’s up to the person with the addiction to sign up. |
