Public Health Expands Nutrition & Wellness Support  in Fundy-Albert & Three Rivers

Residents and organizations in Fundy-Albert and the Salisbury/Three Rivers area now have expanded access to nutrition and wellness support through Public Health.

The team recently welcomed Mia, a new dietitian who will work alongside Health Promoter Kaitlyn Christie to support local communities through education, workshops, and community programming focused on healthy living and nutrition.

Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy eating pattern will help you feel good, maintain your weight and meet your nutrient needs. Here are five tips to support your health through good nutrition:

Eat a variety of healthy foods each day

Fruits, vegetables, protein foods and whole grains are all part of a healthy eating pattern. Try to include all four food groups at each meal and two food groups at snacks. Eating a variety of foods will help you meet your nutrient needs.

Fill up with fibre. A high-fibre diet can lower your risk of stroke, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. A high-fibre diet can also promote bowel regularity and keep you feeling full for longer. Fibre is found in vegetables, fruit, whole grains and plant-based proteins, such as chickpeas, lentils and nuts.

Here are 3 common nutrition myths you should stop believing right now:

1. “Natural” sugars such as maple syrup, honey and coconut sugar are better for you than plain white sugar.

To put it simply, sugar is sugar. All sugars are very similar to one another as they are made up of glucose and fructose (sugar molecules) in different ratios. For example, white sugar is made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose, while maple syrup is made up of 51.5% glucose and 49.5% fructose. Our body cannot tell the difference between white sugar and so called “natural” sugars, it just sees sugar molecules. Although “natural” sugars may contain some trace nutrients, the amounts are so minimal that they do not add up to anything significant (and you shouldn’t be eating sugar for the trace nutrients anyway). The bottom line is that “natural” sugars are added sugars, just like plain white sugar, and they should be limited.
