A 211 caller was struggling financially, having to choose between paying for their diabetes medication or food. They were also behind on utilities. They were homeowners, so were not eligible for certain financial benefits.
The Service Navigator empathized with the caller, which brought down their frustration level. They then gave the caller the phone number to inquire about the Emergency Fuel Benefit (EFB) and explained this benefit. Regarding medication, the Service Navigator mentioned the possibility of inquiring about getting a White Card with their doctor’s help. Although the White Card is for social assistance recipients, doctors can advocate for low income clients. The caller also mentioned their Employment Insurance (EI) claim had been wrongfully denied, so the Service Navigator referred for assistance in appealing the claim.
When the Service Navigator made the follow up call and asked how everything was going, the caller responded: "everything is fantastic; you changed everything". They had gotten their medication, the EI appeal succeeded, and they had accessed the EFB.
