On February 15th, Urban/Rural Rides received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Aging during the Aging Care and Research Symposium in Fredericton. The Honourable Brenda Murphy (right) presented the award to Kelly Taylor, Executive Director of Urban/Rural Rides (left), and Kirstin Shortt, President of the Board of Directors (middle).
The organization had two nominations. One by Jana Jones of Silvermark and the other by Susanne White, Social Inclusion and Community Development Coordinator, Fredericton Region.
On February 15th, Urban/Rural Rides received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Aging during the Aging Care and Research Symposium in Fredericton. The organization had two nominations. One by Jana Jones of Silvermark and the other by Susanne White, Social Inclusion and Community Development Coordinator, Fredericton Region.
Jana Jones from Silvermark, who nominated Urban/Rural Rides for the award, gave a touching speech about why she nominated the program and how, in the short time she has been aware of it, since mid 2021, she has witnessed how it changes lives and has impacted hers as well. Both Shortt and Taylor expressed appreciation to the Lieutenant-Governor, those who nominated the organization and those in attendance at the event for recognizing the value and contribution volunteer driving programs bring to communities and older adults.
Taylor went on to express gratitude for the recognition of the tireless effort the volunteer drivers, the staff and the board of directors invest in the program to provide safe, affordable transportation to seniors in New Brunswick. She shared that, throughout the years, there are many stories of how the service has helped older adults stay in their homes longer,thus avoiding nursing homes and long-term care facilities, how many friendships have been formed between drivers and clients, how many drivers report an increased sense of purpose and joy by helping others, and how many clients report a sense of belonging and value because someone cares.
Taylor said “It is more than just a ride. Together we are changing lives one ride at a time.”
