As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, there’s something especially comforting about settling in with a good book. Whether you enjoy getting lost in a novel, learning something new, listening to an audiobook, or sharing a movie with the family, your local library can help bring great reading and entertainment right to your doorstep.
For residents of New Brunswick who have a library card, Books by Mail is a free service that makes it easy to borrow library materials without having to make a trip to the library.
Using the online library catalogue or the Biblio NB app, library patrons can browse the collection and place holds on books, DVDs, and audiobooks, including both CDs and Playaways. When placing a hold, simply select the “Mail to Me” option.
Prefer a little assistance? You can also contact the library and staff will be happy to help you place a hold on the items you’re looking for.
Once your requested items arrive at the library, staff will check them out on your library card and prepare them for mailing. The items are then sent through Canada Post and delivered to your nearest Canada Post mailbox.
At the Fundy Albert Library, Books by Mail items are generally sent out on Fridays (or Thursdays when Friday is a holiday).
Returning your items
Returning your library materials is just as easy. When your items arrive, they will be in a black mail bag. Simply place the materials back into that same bag, use the return slip provided, and send them back to the library.
And perhaps best of all, there is no cost to use the Books by Mail service.
Why make time for reading?
Reading is more than a pleasant way to pass a winter afternoon. It can be a wonderful way to relax, learn, stay connected and give yourself a break from the busyness of everyday life.
Getting lost in a good story can provide a welcome change of pace, while non-fiction books can help us explore new subjects, discover new interests and continue learning at any age. Reading regularly can also support vocabulary, language skills, concentration and comprehension.
Audiobooks offer another great option. They can be enjoyed while relaxing at home, cooking dinner, doing household chores or simply taking a quiet walk. For those who find it difficult to sit down with a traditional book, audiobooks can make stories and information more accessible.
Make reading part of your colder-season routine
There’s no shortage of things to do when the weather outside is cold, snowy or rainy. Why not make reading one of them?
Create a cozy reading spot, make a cup of tea or coffee, grab a blanket and choose something that interests you. Try a mystery, revisit a favourite author, explore a new genre, pick up a cookbook, or choose a movie for a family night.
You might even make a seasonal reading challenge for yourself: read one book a month, try an author you’ve never read before, or let each member of the household choose something for everyone to enjoy.
And if getting to the library isn’t always convenient, Books by Mail means you don’t have to miss out.
So as we head into the colder months, consider adding a few library books to your routine. With a library card and a few clicks—or a quick call to the library—your next great read can be on its way to you, completely free of charge.
