Albert County is home to many people with hidden talents. This month's spotlight is on some literary examples in the poetry genre.
Prime Minister R.B. Bennett is perhaps the most famous person to come out of Albert County. Bennett valued his privacy and while he had several romantic relationships during his life, he never married. This poem penned by him in 1890 expresses a deep appreciation for the relationships he made in his life using metaphors appropriate for someone who grew up along the busy waterway of the Petitcodiac River.
The next example is a little different in that in much the same way this article was submitted to Connecting Albert County for publication, this poem was originally submitted to a local newspaper in Albert for publication in February of 1885. This newspaper, called The Maple Leaf, sought submissions from people around Albert County but also published foreign news and stories. Since the paper noted it was submitted to The Maple Leaf for publication, it was probably a local person who wrote it. Many such newspapers used to exist all across Canada.
The final poet I wanted to highlight is also the most prolific; Nettie Duffy Steeves. Nettie was born at Osborne Corner and after marriage moved to Shenstone. After her first husband’s death in 1923 she was left with several young children still at home. She became a midwife in the local area while tending the family farm and raised mink for a few years. She published over a hundred poems which were collected into a book in 1982. The poems cover themes of nature, farm life, and local landmarks.
