Youth Writing~ Broken Villains

28/11/2022

Picture
by Brooklyn Rossiter - aged 12

No child ever says they want to be the villain. When they’re older the heroes are written perfectly so the villain will seem colder.
It didn’t matter if they laughed like the joker or smiled like Harley before they realized they had broke her.
Or wore hearts like the queen of hearts.
Villains’ personalities are always gonna be broken glass. Another puzzle for the hero to fix, but nobody ever notices the glass pieces shine as they mix.

They hated Cruella for being out of her mind, but they never spoke about how they were never kind.
They were written to be evil never given moments to be the heroes.
Equal they hated Mother Gothel for trying to stay young. Hated that she grew prettier with every word that she had sung.
But people will always complain when they grow old. Never agree with Mother Gothel because she didn’t have hair of gold.
They fail to understand Maleficent beyond the curse. Never realize just how much her heart had hurt.
The villains are never loved yet always expected to love.
Lies about the villains that are so easily sold. The truth hidden that they are constantly fighting the world.
They don’t get long hair that grows or beautiful names that everyone knows.
They don’t meet their one true love. They are only ever seen as weapons used to draw blood.
They don’t show up in children’s dreams because they were written for their screams.
What nobody notices is that the villain is the hero because they kept fighting despite drowning alone in sorrow.
Not everyone grows up to be a princess. Not everyone meets their soulmate with a stare so intense.
Some people are born to be even greater even though their names were never written down in history or on paper.
They stand out and they are unique. They have voices but people hate when they speak.
These are the people who don’t smile at princesses and their dresses. Instead, they cheer and laugh at villains and their successes.
They relate to the villain because they teach them to be strong. Teach them to stand tall when the world says they’re wrong.
The villains show them peace in being slightly unhinged. Show them how to deal with minds that run faster than the wind.
Being a villain means you are worse. It means you will always be nothing more than a curse.
Heroes are given luxurious lives where villains always pay the price.
The villain isn’t supposed to be born with a heart that is left for those who look like art.
Like Shakespeare had said “hell is empty and all the devils are here.” But the villains are known as the devils so they have nothing to fear.
Villains had to find peace in the dark. Had to go crazy only to leave their mark.
People who view the world in eternal darkness walk around looking like they are heartless.
They have the biggest hearts except they have been broken in many parts.
They will forever be seen as psychotic killers, though really they are just broken villains.

by Donald Alward

The Hillsborough Fire Department is pleased to invite you to attend our Open House that will take place on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, beginning at 6:30pm at the Fire Hall, located at 2789 Main Street. Stop in for a free BBQ and cake. Have a look at some of the specialized firefighting equipment, pick up the latest Fire Prevention messages, ask us questions and watch some of the firefighters play ‘Jaws of Life Jenga’ – a skill-building exercise that teaches precision and control with this very powerful tool. The popular ‘Parade of Trucks and Lights’ will also take place that evening, so be sure to bring the kids along. Sparky the Fire Dog will also be on hand to greet kids of all ages and pose for photos.

Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15, turns 100 years old this October, marking a momentous milestone for the annual campaign. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”

The NB Children’s Foundation has once again generously supported the Literacy Express program for preschoolers with a grant of $4,700.00 to the Village of Hillsborough, which sponsors and hosts the program in the Hillsborough Train Station. This is the fourth award that the Foundation has made to the program since it began in 2013. Also, we extend a big thank you to the Bennett and Albert County Health Care Foundation, which awarded $1,000.00 to the program earlier this year! This was also the fourth time the BACH Foundation has made an award in support of this program and its work with preschoolers from various parts of Albert County.

The Grass Roots Community Economic Development Co-operative (CEDC) would like to thank everyone who participated in our webinars and meetings over the summer as we explained the Community Economic Development investment fund being developed for rural communities in Albert and Westmorland counties.

CEDCs are a way for ordinary New Brunswickers to invest in their local businesses and economy and receive 50% of their investment back through a tax credit on their provincial income tax. These funds are RRSP and TFSA eligible so you may be able to redirect your existing investments and get the benefits of both.

by Victoria Stroud-Arsenault

This year, children are invited to celebrate fantasy at the library under the slogan “Reading is Fantastic!” The Summer Reading Club is designed to encourage young people to read over the summer holidays. When they register, participants receive a reading logbook to keep track of their reading throughout the summer. Participants will receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the summer.

During July and August, all public libraries in the province will present various in-person or online/virtual fun and entertaining activities. The Summer Reading Club is intended for all young New Brunswickers.

Registration for the 2021 Summer Reading Club has started at the Hillsborough Public Library. Children who do not know how to read can participate by having a parent/ guardian read to them. Also, children can register online at gnb.ca/publiclibraries.

The Joy of Reading

PictureAbove: Helen Chipman, a resident of Forest Dale Home. Her father taught her to read before she was sent to the Mohawk Residential School in Brantford, Ontario, where she completed Grade 8. She moved to Riverside in 1973 with her husband Earl who travelled with the carnival.

The joy of reading is an inherited and comforting pastime passed down from my mother, Ramona. Reading was strongly encouraged by my past teachers while attending Alma Consolidated and Caledonia Regional High School. The Alma School library was a space to get excited about ‒ pulling a book off the shelf to explore its contents made life a little more interesting and helped me connect to a world bigger than the nearby lullaby shores of Waterside Beach.

The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series had many gaps in their section as everyone was scrambling to see what Frank and Joe Hardy's next adventure would entail, or if Nancy would solve the mystery as a skillful sleuth. There would be an occasional eye-roll from your peers if you remained in the Apple Paperback series beyond age thirteen. It was time to move on to Stephen King’s IT, perhaps Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and, one of my favourites as a young adult, The Diary of Anne Frank, written by the young girl hidden behind the bookcase, Anne Frank herself.
