I heard a scratching sound. It sounded like something was clawing the sofa. I looked over and my tortoiseshell cat was digging her claws in the furniture.
“Calypso! For the hundredth time, don’t claw the sofa!” I exclaimed as I sat up and tugged on her, her claws digging further into the thin fabric. “Unstick your claws! Come on!” I tugged on her again. With no luck, I sat back down and sighed, frustrated.
I heard my mother calling me to bed. I reluctantly left the sofa, which was torn where I was sitting by the cat. I lazily walked up the stairs into my bedroom and climbed the ladder to my loft bed. I needed to fall asleep before Santa’s arrival.
I awoke in the middle of the night, hearing a bell sound-suspiciously like jingle bells-on the roof of the house. I nearly jumped down my ladder, then reminded myself not to break a leg. I climbed down my ladder quickly and rushed down the stairs to open the door. I ran outside with anticipation and there on the rooftop was a sleigh with reindeer hooked to it by harnesses.
“Oh! Well hello, young child!” A man in a red suit and hat smiled down at me from his sleigh. “Are you… Santa Claus?” I felt like I wanted to leap to the rooftop out of excitement. “No! I’m Taylor Swift! Yes kiddo, I’m Santa Claus,” he smiled and winked.
“Well, you should get back into your bed! You’ll see plenty more presents than this one under your tree if you do!” He picked up a present and tossed it to me. It actually hovered in the air for a moment, then flew over my head. I jumped into the air and caught it. “The Christmas magic blocks me from going into your house while you’re awake, so you better get to sleep or I might be locked out!” With a wink and kind smile, he vanished from the roof and somehow reappeared in his sleigh.
“Where are you going next?” I asked. Santa frowned a little. “I’m not sure! Maybe I’ll visit Haylie, or Lea! They are quite nice children. I can tell because of the places they volunteer, the acts of kindness they do, things like that!” Santa smiled at me. “Will I ever see you again?” I asked, looking up at him with sad eyes. “Well, you never know. The world’s a magical place!” He winked, and Christmas lights appeared on the sleigh.
Surprisingly, tears started to form as I thought about how many children Santa Claus was about to make happy.
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” He said. My eyes widened as he called all the reindeer’s names, the sleigh lifting off the roof with the hoofbeats of reindeer and bells jingling, breaking the silence of the dark and crisp night. “Merry Christmas, Santa!” I yelled back.
A sudden burst of energy seemed to wash over me and, just at that moment, the red and green Christmas lights on the sleigh started lighting up and the northern lights beamed brighter than they ever did before.
A small head poked out the back of the sleigh. It took a small green and red device out of its pocket. The device had “Portal” written on it and the elf pressed it. It started glowing and made a whirring noise.
A portal opened in front of the sleigh. It looked like a circle of northern lights, shining brightly. “Never forget to believe!” Santa called. The sleigh vanished into the portal.
I felt another wave of energy. This time it felt like a sort of cozy, calming aura of hope. I made a silent promise in my head to never forget this wonderful experience and who I met on this Christmas Eve.
I awoke with the weight of Calypso lying on my chest purring, I smelled the familiar scent of pancakes cooking, and heard the soft, warm sound of Christmas music playing.
P.S: Tell Santa I said hello if you ever see him!
