I’ll admit it—I’m a passionate advocate for our public library system. It’s one of the most incredible resources we have, right here in our own communities. As a voracious reader, I rely on it constantly, and I’m far from alone: one in three New Brunswickers hold a library card, and every single day more than 2,000 people walk through the doors of their local library.
For me, access to the Hillsborough Public Library saves hundreds of dollars each year—not to mention precious space on my overflowing bookshelves. Whenever I hear about a book that sparks my interest, I log in to my online account to check availability. More often than not, there are multiple copies ready to borrow. I place a hold, and before long, the book arrives at Hillsborough. Honestly, it feels like magic. And it’s free.
Libraries are more than books. It’s a community builder. They’ve provided invaluable research for my writing projects, and they’re essential hubs for book clubs, students, and seniors. Throughout each year, they offer passes to local attractions. They distribute radon test kits. They provide public access to computers and printers. And here in Hillsborough, Victoria always has a lineup of creative programs for all ages—just check the monthly schedule to see what’s happening.
That’s why I donate annually to support our library. Contributions help fund the library collection by sponsoring new book purchases. You can even donate a special book in memory of a loved one, complete with a commemorative label inside.
This year, I found out the impact of giving is even greater. The Government of New Brunswick is matching every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $300,000. That means your gift goes twice as far—more books on the shelves, more programs for the community, more opportunities for everyone.
So if you use your public library, please consider supporting it through the New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation. It’s a win-win for readers, creators, and communities alike.
