The quilt registration for the 49th Annual Quilt Show and Sale is taking place on July 17th to 19th at the Albert County Museum. The Committee is now busy tabulating the registrations, preparing the sales tags and organizing volunteers. We are very pleased that there are over 225 quilted projects registered - quilts in various sizes, colours, designs and quilting styles from queen, lap and crib quilts, other smaller quilted projects and quilt tops; from quilters in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
The Quilt Show has seen many changes over the past 49 years. In its beginning, the show was held in the Court House and the quilts were draped over the public gallery benches. For a few years, it was held in the Memorial Hall in Hillsborough, but then moved back to the Museum’s Community Hall after the refurbishment was completed in 2010.

Quilting has greatly changed over the decades - our grandmother’s tools of the trade were cardboard (often cereal boxes), a pencil, a compass, a ruler and using a pair of scissors from those five items, she would create her templates for cutting quilt block pieces and patterns. The templates were hand traced on the fabric and cut out with scissors. Today, the cutting is usually done with acrylic rulers, rotary cutters and cutting mats. Most of grandmother’s piecing was done by hand, if she was fortunate to have a treadle sewing machine. The piecing may have been done on the machine, but her quilting would have definitely been by hand. Although hand quilting is still done today, many quilts are machine quilted either on a domestic, embroidery or long arm computerized sewing machine. Grandmother’s inspiration would have been from her friends or magazines – The Family Herald or Free Press Weekly. Today, we find our inspiration from various online platforms and purchase yardage or pre-cuts from a local quilt shop or online. When we talk of using scraps, it is NOT from our used clothing or aprons, it is pieces of fabric left over from a previous project.

This year, a new evening event, “Vintage Views” on Wednesday, July 16 at 7:00pm will provide a preview of the quilts and also be an enjoyable social time! Tickets are $15.00 and available to purchase on the Museum website www.albertcountymuseum.com.
Everyone attending the evening event is welcome to bring a quilt and share a bit about it. With the colourful quilts, a “quilt parade” will be formed to walk from the Community Hall to the Court House, where desserts and a beverage will be enjoyed.
In addition to the Quilt Show and Sale, Gwen Dixon from Riverview will offer two workshops in the Court House. Gwen is a talented Fibre Artist who has published several articles including designs and patterns in Rug Hooking magazines. She presents a variety of Fibre Art workshops, and sells both kits and finished projects.
The workshops this year have a “beach theme”

Saturday, July 19 from 10:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. a Rug hooking Workshop – Portrait of a Seagull - $85.00

A “raffle quilt” is part of our annual show. This year the queen size raffle quilt – “Fall Flair” - was pieced by Joan Smith, and machine quilted by Marjorie Henwood, the Shepody Quilter. Raffle Quilt Tickets are available at the Museum’s Admissions and Gift Shop in the Silver Jubilee Lodge and Library. The quilt will be on display at the quilt show. This year there is also an additional raffle prize, an “Albert County Adventure Package”.
We will be excited to welcome you to the 49th Annual Quilt Show and Sale – July 17-19 from 10:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. The admission to the show is $3.00 per person.
