A bald eagle overlooking the marshlands and pastures in Riverside-Albert, Fundy Albert during winter. As we sit on the cusp of winter it can be challenging at times to remember that a community exists outside our windows that are darkened so much earlier than many of us would like! When the days are shortening and the night times feel longer, it's easy to forget that there is a whole world and community out there that is still moving and waiting for you to take part in it.
Albert County is perhaps best known in the summer months. Tourism keeps our restaurants hopping, our accommodations full, and many of our businesses thriving. However, it is important to remember that all of these places still exist even when there's snow in the ground! In fact, Albert County takes on a unique life of its own when it's dusted by those white flakes, and some of the most beautiful views, warming meals, and greater sense of community can happen when we remember that we all still exist beyond our doorstep. Our sense of community can not only continue, but it can thrive and grow, in this shoulder season of time.
The Wallace Farm in a winter's eve snowstorm. To that end, Connecting Albert County received an email about a month ago from one of our community partners, Fundy Tourism/ Albert County Tourism Association to see if we might be interested in supporting them highlighting businesses that stay open during the winter. After a quick conversation, we agreed to do just that, and open the door to a few other community groups, knowing that our turnover timelines would be incredibly short. What has resulted is an equal collaboration and partnership between the Albert County Community Health Center, Chipoudy Communities Revitalization Committee (CCRC), Connecting Albert County (CAC), Fundy Tourism/ Albert County Tourism Association (ACTA), and the Hillsborough Public Library. We all reached out to our networks and community partners, and despite a less than 2-week turnaround, gathered information that will provide you with resources and information that will last you from December all the way until March!
Please take the time to look up these organizations, follow them on social media, and stay in tune with what they are doing over the next few months. They will help keep you connected, provide you with so many resources, and can answer questions about a wide range of services that can make this winter a healthier, happier, more connected one for you and the people around you. It will help you keep the magic of the holidays all winter long, from kicking off December with Christmas in the Country, all the way to preparing for spring gardens in March.
At CAC, we invite you to get outside this winter. An adventure in the snow, a drive during good weather, attend a music night, get out to bingo or karaoke, Chase that 'ol Ace until it's found, try something new like pickleball, go back to something old and learn to crochet, or maybe write down some stories or recipes and share them with your neighbours via CAC! Don't put off caring for your health just because it's chilly outside - the folks at the Health Centre in Riverside-Albert, Hillsborough, and Petticodiac are eager to serve you.
Connecting Albert County was created to be a publication and community resource that focuses on our rural communities in Albert County. Our origin story says it all - we are created for you, we are created by you, and we continue only with your support. Individuals, non-profits, community groups, and businesses all play a role in keeping our publication thriving. As large media outlets and for-profit organizations develop and threaten to push us out, we need you more than ever to contribute articles, events, and engage with our publication as a primary local resource.
This is just the beginning of what our annual Winter Publication will have to offer! We anticipate next year's publication will be thicker, a full winter resource without anything missed, but we hope you enjoy what we've pulled together in a short amount of time. This gives us an idea of what we can accomplish when we all work together - even in a short 2-week turnaround!
Reach out and let us know what you think. Is a winter resource something you find useful? What would you add? Is there anything you would remove? We want to hear from you as we develop this service.
Have a wonderful, cozy, winter filled with fun, as much down time as you would wish, and a renewed sense of community.
