Japan has been growing in popularity as a travel destination for many years now. With the popularity of anime, manga, and Japanese video games continuing to increase, I don’t see that changing any time soon. I recently came back from my second trip to Japan and in this article I would like to share some tips for making your own trip to Japan as enjoyable as possible.

Dogs don’t fail. They perform as trained. Dogs “fail” when we ask them to perform that of which we don’t adequately prepare them for. ~ Steve White

Did you know you can start preparing puppies for success on day three of life? When I decided to start breeding Labradors, I wanted to make sure I was doing it properly. I did a lot of research, took many courses on breeding, genetics, temperament evaluation testing and scoring as well as training. I finally fell on a curriculum that made sense. Parts of the program were first developed by the Military for service dogs and then that theory was developed further by a breeder in Nevada as a starter for service, therapy and facility dogs as well as developing very loving, calm, and confident dogs for pet homes (not any less important than working dogs).

13 May 2025

FUNDY-ST. MARTINS (GNB) – It will now cost less for New Brunswick residents to visit some of the provincial parks.

The government has established a 25 percent resident discount on the cost of daily and seasonal entry passes for provincial parks managed by the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The goal is to make parks more accessible while encouraging people to get active and spend more time outside.

“Our parks provide New Brunswickers and visitors with inclusive, protected spaces that inspire education, wellness and the enjoyment of natural and cultural destinations,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Isabelle Thériault. “This discount on provincial park passes is an investment in New Brunswickers, not only as an incentive to stay active, but also as an opportunity to discover the beauties of our province.”

The Adventures of a Maritime Dog Breeder: Puppies, Puppies, Puppies!

"Empowering puppies to be all they can be with and for their forever families."
“Happiness is a warm puppy.” ~ Unknown

As an ethical breeder, you’ve done everything you need to do. You’ve health checked the adults, have planned a litter based on pairing the right combo for temperament, sizing, compatibility, and genetic based health results. You’ve set up a rendezvous and now your momma dog, also known as a dam, is expecting puppies. As the gestational period comes to a close, you are both getting ready to welcome a litter of adorable little puppies. The whelping(delivery) box is set up, all the supplies needed are placed within easy reach. She is getting used to the possibly newer surroundings where she and the puppies will be safely and quietly away from distractions. Possibly an ultrasound and/or X-ray has been completed, and you know how many puppies are expected or perhaps you’re waiting to find out by letting nature do its thing without the intervention of modern veterinary medicine. As the excited anticipation grows along with her expanding mid section and obvious discomfort due to the pressure of puppies, you offer any sort of comfort you can. Energy levels decrease as she rests, preparing for what’s to come with both the whelping of her puppies and the care they will require. You’ll discover you’ll do anything to help ease her burden and assist her in bringing her puppies into the world.

Some believe that dogs should be left to their own devices, it’s a natural occurrence and humans shouldn’t interfere. While those beliefs aren’t wrong, there are risks. Here are some surprising facts:
  • Deaths during their first week of life can be as high as a staggering 30%. This would also include stillborn.
  • Deaths in puppies during the first 2 months is roughly 15%.
  • 14.8% of litters will include a stillbirth and 6.6% the entire litter is lost.
  • 9.38% of puppies are lost in the first 72 hours.

Fundy Curling Club End of Season Update

Now that the ice plant has been turned off and the curling rink is slowly melting, the time is right to update everyone on the late season events that put the icing on what has been an incredible year for the FCC. For the first time in a couple of decades some of our Little Rocks and U18 members hit the road in late March to show New Brunswick just what amazing young curlers we have right here in our community!

Our fantastic U18 team headed to the Sussex Curling Club for a one day bonspiel while two teams of energetic Little Rockers were at Curl Moncton for a three day bonspiel that attracted 42 teams from across New Brunswick. The U18 team and Little Rocker teams had excellent results as they adjusted quickly to playing in unfamiliar surroundings. Parents, coaches and spectators from the FCC who travelled to cheer our teams on were treated to spectacular shots, great sportsmanship and victories along the way. Congratulations to all the players who participated and made the entire community very proud of what you have achieved over the last year!

You may remember in October that I shared about the work that the UNB Nursing students have been doing as a part of their Community Nursing practicums that take place in the fall and winter of each year. Since then, we’ve had 2 cohorts of students working with seniors in the community, as well as with youth at Caledonia High School & Middle School. Nursing Homes Without Walls and Caledonia Place have welcomed the students, who have been providing educational sessions throughout the community, on health topics of interest such as preventing falls, and health habits. The schools have received presentations on topics including Health Misinformation, Substance Use, Eating Disorders, and Stress Management.
