Christmas in the County is Coming!

The 23rd annual Christmas in the Country will be held the weekend of Saturday Dec. 6 and Sunday Dec. 7. For almost a quarter of a century, the weekend has been an increasingly popular shopping event, and social gathering for friends and family alike. Many people, in particular women, make plans to spend the weekend together, driving along Rt. 114, 915 and in a few back roads, to look for unique gifts and homemade treats to make the holidays even more exciting.

It originally started as the Fundy Studio Tour, with a small group of talented artists and artisans and has grown into a marketplace spread along many kilometers of Fundy Albert.

Gateway Market to Host Annual Halloween Costume Contest!

The Gateway Market is excited for spooky season! On Halloween night, Trick-or-Treaters of all ages are welcome to stop into the store, collect a Halloween treat, and get a photo snapped to be entered in their Halloween Costume Competition. Last year the staff and owners were blown away by how many in the community took part - and all of their amazing costumes.

As a local business that fosters love of their community, community development, a culture of joy, and a wicked sense of humour, Halloween presents the perfect opportunity for the owners, staff, and community to partner together! "All our Gateway Shoppers and their families are welcome to get out and have some fun! Put on a costume and take part - who knows, you could win a prize!" says Byron Gourley, who partners with his spouse, Chuck Leblanc, as owners and operators of the Gateway.

CAC to Partner with Local Businesses to Open Brick and Mortar Location

Behind the scenes, Connecting Albert County (CAC) has been undergoing a period of development and creation as we diligently work to serve our community. In rural communities, a theme of re-connecting with print media is emerging and CAC is experiencing that within rural Albert County as well. Renewed engagement with our print publication has resulted in a distribution rate increase, more advertising of local events, and contributions from community members, businesses, and organizations. In a time where connection is needed more than ever, we are proud to provide a service where we can act as a centre of idea sharing, building bridges through communication, and holding a space where individuals within our community (and from outside the community) can connect to our people, places, and organizations.

As CAC gradually repositions itself to provide additional support services, it has resulted in us seeing a trend for folks to desire opportunities for real-world, eye-to-eye meetings, visits, and information gathering. We are thrilled to announce that we will be opening an office location, thanks to partnership with The Gateway Market, and newly opened Bluemind Counselling & Consulting, at 2840 Main Street, Hillsborough.

CAC wants to be there to help you - community members, organizations, and businesses - to build relationships with one another, have a central location to share or inquire about community resources/various local information, advertise your events, or job opportunities.

Regular office hours will begin in October, from 9am to 12:30pm on Mondays and Fridays, with times in between by appointment or by chance.

You are invited to pop by and say hello October 24th any time between 9am and 5pm , in a joint "open house" with Bluemind Counselling & Consulting. Details to follow!

What to feed your dog is often a bit of a conundrum. It starts with how often and how much and ends with what kibble should I feed him. Somewhere in the middle are treats and whatnot, but what should these be? Should you only feed treats you pick up at the pet store? Are all treats equal or are some better than others? What about the added calories? Let me bust some myths, share some insights and help you and your dog in finding healthy meals and treats, resulting in better health and longevity.

Myth One – table scraps are good for your dog.

Fact - While this used to be the majority of a dog’s food source 40 years ago, it’s not the best option for today. Spices, processed meals, etc., aren’t great for dogs. Increased sodium and carbohydrates can actually harm your dog and cause heart issues and diabetes. Instead, feed a dry or wet food with real ingredients. Try to avoid products that start with corn and chicken meal as there are no real nutrients in these. Look for those with protein and vegetables as the first ingredients. Fun fact: when reading an ingredients list, they are listed in order of having the largest amount at the beginning of the list and work their way down.

Myth Two – Grains are bad for dogs.

Fact - Unless your dog has a sensitivity to grains, they should be part of your dog's everyday diet. That being said, corn, wheat, soy, and bulgar are not at the top of the list as beneficial grains. These can increase the glycemic levels or contain gluten that can increase the risk of digestive and skin issues. However, grains such as rice, oats, barley, quinoa can increase necessary fibers, helping your dog’s digestive system. Just like humans, dogs can get stomach bugs and feeding a diet of boiled chicken or beef and rice can help settle their stomach quickly.

Myth Three – All treats are created equal.

Fact – There are so many options available to you for treating your dogs. Everything from Milk Bones to soft chews; bacon strips to freeze dried fish. While most dogs would love any of these, they aren’t all created equal. Again, review the ingredients. If you can’t pronounce most of the ingredients, they likely aren’t the best option for your dog. Try choosing treats with only a few ingredients. We tend to lean towards single ingredient treats like freeze dried or dehydrated beef or lamb.
