With tariff threats seemingly changing regularly, contact your Chamber of Commerce to stay up to date on what is happening, and how it can affect you or your business/organization.
The following letter was distributed by the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce by Rhonda Tulk-Lane ([email protected]) and is supported by the Albert County Chamber of Commerce.
New U.S. Tariff Threat to Canada – What You Need to Know
According to the letter, the proposed tariff is being justified on two fronts:
the fentanyl crisis, and concerns over Canadian tariffs on dairy.
It is unclear whether the 35% tariff will be applied broadly across all Canadian goods or targeted only at non-CUSMA-compliant products. And whether this new measure will replace or be added to existing tariffs on sectors such as steel and automotive.
The following tariffs remain in place:
- Steel and aluminum: 50% (25% + 25% under Section 232)
- Automotive parts: 25% on non-CUSMA-compliant items
- Other goods: 25% on non-CUSMA-compliant products
- Potash and energy: 10% on non-CUSMA-compliant shipments
"This proposed tariff could threaten the stability of Atlantic Canada's supply chains and the competitiveness of our businesses. We are asking the federal government to act swiftly to protect the interests of our exporters, workers, and communities." Rhonda Tulk-Lane, CEO, Atlantic Chamber of Commerce.
