The Maplegrove Inn will be celebrating all things maple with our Maplefest Tea on March 28th and 29th.
One of the featured items on the menu is a fabulous maple sugar loaf. We'll share the recipe in a moment, but first we need to talk about the red squirrel that lives in our pizza oven.
Kate has developed quite a friendship with this little guy based on her morning ritual of putting out "bird" seed while he watches from the pizza shed and rubs his little squirrel hands together in greedy anticipation. Last March, we noticed him spending a lot of time in one of our Sugar Maple trees and Kate managed to take some great photos of him licking the dried maple sap from the bark. We did some research and we were delighted to discover that red squirrels are known as the original wild sugar-makers! They bite branches and make V - shaped cuts with their front teeth allowing a little sap to ooze out. They then wait for wind evaporation to transform the sap into a thicker taffy and get busy licking! Country living in Canada is the absolute best!
Please enjoy the squirrel photo shoot and the recipe!
