“Buy Local.” It’s a common yet valuable message. It’s easy to see the advantage of supporting local businesses, particularly in rural Albert County. When we buy goods or services from small businesses in our area, we help provide income not just for those entrepreneurs, but also employment for their staff (possibly our neighbours) and help keep local services available in our community.

Article and pictures by Dawne McLean The Albert County Exhibition is proud to be the second oldest agricultural fair in New Brunswick. In commemoration of the 105th anniversary of the Albert County Exhibition, it is only fitting that a tribute be given in recognition of all the directors and volunteers, whose community involvement and commitment over the past century have enabled the exhibition to reach this milestone of 105 years, when so many other rural exhibitions have disappeared from our Canadian society. Story & photos by Janet Wallace Keeping elementary students focused on one activity for an hour is a challenge, particularly when they’ve been in classes all morning, yet Sara Liptay succeeds. At Hillsborough Elementary School, 21 students from grades one to three spend every lunch hour learning to play the violin. Sistema-NB, a program of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, was inspired by the highly successful El Sistema initiative in Venezuela. The concept is to create social change through music. Sistema-inspired programs are in sixty countries; Sistema-NB is the largest such program in Canada and one of the largest in North America. Now in its seventh year, the Rising Tide Festival showcases Atlantic Canada talent in Fundy National Park's extraordinary natural setting. During this family-friendly event, held on August 19, 20 and 21, 2016, festivalgoers will be able to take part in many activities such as a smart phone photography workshop, a songwriters' circle, a sunrise ceremony, many music concerts, nature-based experiences and more.

When Johann Heinrich Stieff (Steeves) was born in 1718 in a German village, there was nothing that hinted he would father a family whose legacy includes hundreds of thousands of descendants, located around the World. This global group of relatives are known today as the “Steeves (Steves) Cousins.” It is time to welcome the Cousins home from far and wide. The 250th Anniversary of the Steeves Family arrival in New Brunswick is going be a historic event. This week long celebration in July of 2016 will stretch from the landing point in Moncton to Hillsborough, NB. Events will be posted on our calendar. The origin of the Steeves family is a fascinating story on how each generation can build on the success of the previous generation and spread success worldwide. On the midnight high tide on late on October 13th, a fleet of lobster fishing boats will sail from the wharf in Alma, New Brunswick, to the cheers of a loyal and appreciative community. The autumn lobster season in this small fishing and tourism village kicks off with a festive celebration that draws international attendance, more than doubling the usual population of 252.
On Friday July 10th we dropped by the Albert County Museum to see the 39th annual Quilt Show and Sale.
We were amazed at all the beautiful and colourful quilts that were on display from the 37 different participants all from the Moncton and surrounding areas. The show was a great success as people from as far as Saudi Arabia were purchasing the quilts, which the participants had spent hours on and making. There was also a quilt raffle for the quilt on display with tickets being sold for $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. The quilt can be shipped anywhere in North America and the tickets will remain on sale until the draw date, which is October 15th, 2015. It was great to see people stopping by to see the gorgeous homemade creations from local quilters, and to support the Albert County Museum! Written by Jillian Shea, Albert County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. There are many reasons why the citizens of Albert County, NB, fought to keep Riverside Consolidated School open. A school closure would result in fewer young people in the region, a smaller pool of workers, a drop in property values. The most significant impact, however, would be felt by the elementary students in our region. Read more below. |
