Growlers, Albert County Style

On February 8th, 2015, Rick Flanagan, Kevin Snair and Pierre Desjardins donned their toques and down-filled jackets to head to the Hopewell Rocks to explore the iced-in shoreline dotted with growlers (small icebergs). The sun -- shining clear in a cobalt-blue sky -- belied the temperature:  with windchill, it was -20 C.

The guys spent three hours exploring the ice-crusted landscape. Kevin captured their adventure on the video below.

The Hopewell Rocks is a familiar landscape for the trio -- they spend their summers monitoring the beach as park interpreters -- but winter paints this landscape in dramatically different colours and provides entirely different thrills and challenges.

Says Kevin:

"I have been a professional photographer for a quarter century (see www.creativeimagery.com), but found my true calling as an Interpretive Guide at the Hopewell Rocks. The raw beauty resonates in me and I have an unending thirst to share this connection with others. This excursion was so moving because the shoreline showed us another side of her that we had never experienced before. Pierre compared it to having an affair with your spouse (so familiar and yet so exciting and new).

"On this bitterly cold February morning, the journey along the shoreline was grueling. Surface ice and large growlers made the walking difficult but the scenery was surreal. These are the highlights of our three-hour excursion.

"Please note that the Hopewell Rocks is a very dangerous place in winter conditions and should not be explored without the aid of an experienced guide. We filmed it so you don't have to."
