H2WHOA!

By Jane Chrysostom

More than thirty volunteers so far are contributing to the 12-act stage production called “H2WHOA!” taking place in Alma on May 4th at 7:00pm.

Alma is in dire need of funding for water exploration to drill for a new water source for the village. At the village council meeting in March, Mayor Shortt gave her support to any initiative from the community to help fund the $184,000 needed. Jane Chrysostom decided to take up that challenge.

“It’s for two reasons, really,” said Jane, “One is of course to raise awareness to our provincial and federal leaders that our community of just over 200 residents doesn’t have the financial resources to fund this project, and we need help. The other reason is to entertain. I think we’ll accomplish both!”

The show features professionals and talented amateurs in song, dance, live music, skits, and spoofs each with a water-related theme or twist. Everyone will recognize the classic Broadway show tunes, but the lyrics have been adapted to bring a message closer to home. For example, Eliza Doolittle (played by Anna Holdaway) from “My Fair Lady” will sing about how she could have WASHED all night, instead of how she could have DANCED all night.

“We’re so fortunate to have folks stepping forward to help from all over,” Jane said with enthusiasm. “Bit players who love Alma and heard about the show and its cause are coming from as far away as Fredericton." The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra in Moncton will recreate an iconic score and scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie. A professional magician will perform water-themed illusions. Folks of every age from the community are stepping up to the microphone, or "engaging the audience with unexpected and amazingly poignant roles."

Culligan Water from Moncton will provide drinking water at intermission. This will remind folks that until we get the needed funding, another boil water order is looming in Alma. The demand for potable water spikes when the summer visitors start to arrive.

“With committed volunteers, the camaraderie of community, and the cooperation of our local and provincial leaders, I hope this show will be the kick-starter to some aggressive efforts to actively find the funds needed to bring the Village of Alma up to the standard of a world-class global destination all year long,” Jane concluded.

Tickets available in Alma at Cleveland Place 8580 Main St. & Fundy General Store & Crooked Creek Convenience in Riverside-Albert. Price is $10. Advance purchases recommended. For details: 887-2213
