Last year a woman named Ursula, who had a table at the Hillsborough farmers market, realized it was a bit of a drive for people in Riverside-Albert to get there. She recounts, “I thought why not have something more local. It's a beautiful little town, why is it a drive-thru town? So I figured it made sense to have a market here and I started hunting around. Three days before I posted that there would be a market I had made arrangements with the exhibition hall.” The first weekend there were five vendors which rose to sixteen vendors at its highest point. The number of vendors fluctuated from week-to-week based on people’s schedules.
Challenges faced by the market last year included a lack of adequate signage and the market’s location within a fenced-off area which Ursula thinks dissuaded some people from entering as they may not have been sure they were allowed to be there. The signage issue is hoped to be fixed this year.
The Riverside-Albert Farmers Market will open at the end of June and is located at 5895 King St (the site of the Albert County Exhibition). Table fees are set at $10, all of which goes to the exhibition hall. Last year the market went from 11am-3pm every Sunday and Ursula says they will be keeping the same schedule this year. She encourages vendors of all sorts from food and craft vendors to kids wanting to set up a lemonade stand to give it a shot.
