Alma has its Celebration Days, Hillsborough has Homecoming Days and Riverside-Albert’s Shepody Days is growing to rival these two neighbouring celebrations, while sandwiched between them on the second weekend in July.
Shepody Days began four years ago with a great idea by Joanne Butland, her mom Beulah Morrissey and her family – to hold kayak races on the river near Riverside Consolidated School.

The Firemen continued their volunteer activities at the Saturday Kayak Races, sponsored by Crooked Creek Adventures (Joanne Butland’s business) and also were involved with the Soapbox Derby. A Steak Barbeque was held at the Curling Club. Chipoudy Communities Revitalization Committee (CCRC) lent their support to all activities, and their Saturday Community Breakfast and Farmers’ Market drew their share of visitors.
Last year people thought “this year has been the best yet! – why not a full weekend of fun?” And the idea to incorporate a Flea Market took shape. The Albert County Exhibition Board of Directors agreed to the use of the facilities for the event, and CCRC worked throughout the winter and spring to garner sponsors, community volunteers and vendors for a Friday through Sunday flea market on the ACE fairgrounds. The ACE summer students, Justin Tingley and Dustin Steeves, were pressed into service and helped the vendors get set up, and provided support to all. Broadview Power Sports donated a 4x4 to assist in grounds management, as well as to help with the Soapbox Derby.
Darrell and Kathy Weir again sponsored the yearly Fireworks Display Friday night. Ed’s Welding donated the Portapotties for the race site, and set up additional units on the fairgrounds. The Riverside-Albert and Alma Volunteer firemen provided Security each evening. The Riverside-Albert Ambulance detachment was on site for all weekend events.
The Community Breakfast was sponsored by Forest Dale Home, and the regular Farmers’ Market vendors plyed their wares in the Oulton Hall. The vendors at the Flea Market were universal in their praise for the care and attention of the committee. They provided helpful suggestions and many signed up already for next year!
The Kayak Races evolved this year into an event that focused on “giving back” – each team had a charity that they were racing for, and the entry fees went into a pool that was divided among the top 3 teams for their charities. In addition, online donations for all charities represented by the teams were accepted.
The Soapbox Derby was well-attended, and the Steak Barbeque was sold out. Foods of the Fundy Valley provided a delicious Soup Buffet on Friday night.
There was no question about the increased traffic throughout the weekend; the crowds were drawn by the diversity of activities provided by an engaged community of people cooperating to bring a special weekend of celebration to this corner of the county. As the various committees reconvene to do a “post-mortem” of events, suggestions for improvement and expansion are being considered and planned for.
