2019 Anglophone East Regional Heritage Fair

The Albert County Museum was bustling with activity on May 8th as Anglophone East students came to spend the day participating in the 2019 Regional Heritage Fair. 

​Students from nine district schools proudly displayed their creative and innovative heritage projects of varied themes and project categories in the Community Hall. Judges interviewed the students and assessed the projects based on specific evaluation criteria for the special juried awards, as well as other prizes. However, the day included much more than the judging of the projects!

The Albert County Museum was bustling with activity and excitement on Wednesday, May 11 with Anglophone East students participating in the 2016 Regional Heritage Fair.

This year, the Honourable Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and His Honour, Mr. Ronald Vienneau were present to view the heritage projects and then participate in the Awards Ceremony, making this an extraordinary experience for all in attendance.

A brief history of the Steeves family name

Heinrich and Regina Stief left their homeland Germany in 1749 and settled in Pennsylvania. From there, in 1766, they and a small group of fellow settlers migrated to the rough terrain around New Brunswick's Petitcodiac River.

Faced with starvation, frigid winters, and abandonment by their sponsors-‐among them Benjamin Franklin‐-the settlers defied the odds by not only surviving, but prospering. The Stief family finally settled in what is now Hillsborough, Albert County, New Brunswick.

In the Return of Inhabitants of the Township of Hillsborough taken in 1783 the Stief name disappeared and was anglicized into Steeve. The Walling Map of 1862 records the name as Steves and after a couple other subsequent ‘clerical errors’ the name has become Steeves. Steeves descendants now number upwards of 300,000 worldwide.
