The Search for Lewis Steeves

I was born a Steeves from the line of Lewis, the 7th son of Heinrich and Rachel. Lewis died in 1827. Some time ago, our family discovered where Lewis was buried and we were pleasantly surprised that the headstone is still standing and legible.

"So what?" some would say.

Classic Cars in Hillsborough: Gary Steeves Insurance Country Cruise-in 2017

The Gary Steeves Insurance Annual “Country Cruise In” was held on July 6th, 2017. All around the Kiwanis Centre in Hillsborough, NB, shiny cars were parked -- Classics Cars, Street Rods, and Muscle Cars. People sauntered around the cars, sat in lawn chairs and looked under engines.

Eddie Chase and Graffitti Four provided the soundtrack -- their live music gave the event a fun atmosphere. On top of all this, the Hillsborough Kiwanis Club fed a huge crowd -- and all the proceeds going towards the many good causes they support.

Rising Tide Festival

Now in its seventh year, the Rising Tide Festival showcases Atlantic Canada talent in Fundy National Park's extraordinary natural setting. During this family-friendly event, held on August 19, 20 and 21, 2016, festivalgoers will be able to take part in many activities such as a smart phone photography workshop, a songwriters' circle, a sunrise ceremony, many music concerts, nature-based experiences and more.

Hiram Creek Trestle - 1875 - 2012

The Hiram Creek Trestle on Dawson Settlement Road was originally built in 1875 as part of the Albert County Railway. It was part of the line from Alma to Salisbury. This eventually became part of Canadian National. It has been repaired and rebuilt several times. In 1982 the line between Hillsborough and Baltimore was sold to a preservation group and became the Salem & Hillsborough Railroad.

Alma Fishing Fleet Launch 2015

Kicking off the activities for the Fall lobster fishing season, the Molly Kool Kitchen Party hosted a full house in Molly Kool's childhood home on October 14th. Guests were entertained with song, dance, music, and storytelling, set in the era when Molly earned her Captain's certificate in 1939. It set the spirit and mood for the 2015 Fleet Launch, as Alma visitors and residents spent the day participating, observing, and taking photos as the crews prepared their lobster boats, and loaded their traps and equipment. It was a colourful flurry of activity up and down Main Street all day long.

Alma Fleet Launch!

On the midnight high tide on late on October 13th, a fleet of lobster fishing boats will sail from the wharf in Alma, New Brunswick, to the cheers of a loyal and appreciative community. The autumn lobster season in this small fishing and tourism village kicks off with a festive celebration that draws international attendance, more than doubling the usual population of 252.

Molly Kool Award

Born in 1916, Molly Kool became the first licensed female Master Mariner (sea captain) on May 25, 1939. When asked of the significance of this event, she responded that it was the Great Depression, her father had a small vessel and she "needed a job".

Quilt Show and Sale at the Albert County Museum

On Friday July 10th we dropped by the Albert County Museum to see the 39th annual Quilt Show and Sale.

We were amazed at all the beautiful and colourful quilts that were on display from the 37 different participants all from the Moncton and surrounding areas. The show was a great success as people from as far as Saudi Arabia were purchasing the quilts, which the participants had spent hours on and making.

There was also a quilt raffle for the quilt on display with tickets being sold for $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. The quilt can be shipped anywhere in North America and the tickets will remain on sale until the draw date, which is October 15th, 2015.

It was great to see people stopping by to see the gorgeous homemade creations from local quilters, and to support the Albert County Museum!
