by Chandra Smith September 30 to October 2 the Hillsborough Baptist Church will be celebrating its 200th Anniversary. In essence, it will actually be winding up its anniversary year. The church has been celebrating this special milestone anniversary with different events held throughout the year. In March, members went to Broadleaf Ranch and participated in an old-fashioned sleigh ride with hot chocolate and cookies. There was also space provided inside the lodge where people of all ages played games together. by Amanda Rossiter and Bob Rochon The upcoming amalgamations of municipal areas in New Brunswick have spurred many questions in the community and I also have many questions myself. My belief is that it’s time to ask the questions and provide a review of what is coming. The following are the questions that I asked and the responses that were given. Responses were prepared by Bob Rochon, member of the Entity 42 Elected Officials Advisory Committee and Mayor of the Village of Hillsborough and reviewed by Governance Reform Facilitator, Chad Peters. Greetings from the Albert County Museum. The 2018 summer season is behind us and my motley crew of dedicated summer employees are back to school. Usually, that's the end of our Museum hours, but I'm pleased to report that thanks to a grant from the New Brunswick Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, the Museum was able to hire three "experienced employees” (that's over the age of 55) to extend our season to October 14th. What a great opportunity for our older fall tourists to take tours of the ACM under the umbrella of the glorious fall foliage of our wonderful County. In this installment of Connecting Albert County, I thought I would spin a story of days gone by. A story of the early settlers of our area that dates back to the year 1698. The Gary Steeves Insurance Annual “Country Cruise In” was held on July 6th, 2017. All around the Kiwanis Centre in Hillsborough, NB, shiny cars were parked -- Classics Cars, Street Rods, and Muscle Cars. People sauntered around the cars, sat in lawn chairs and looked under engines. Eddie Chase and Graffitti Four provided the soundtrack -- their live music gave the event a fun atmosphere. On top of all this, the Hillsborough Kiwanis Club fed a huge crowd -- and all the proceeds going towards the many good causes they support. Pictures and story By: Chandra Smith In August 2016, The Hillsborough Womens Institute group was awarded one of the 150th Celebration Gardens to promote Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017 from the Garden Council of Canada. Their application included that they would like to honour the Father of Confederation, William Henry Steeves who was born in Hillsborough and also a life time member of the WI group Dora Braam, who immigrated from Holland in the 1940’s. She has been an active member in the Hillsborough area and is well known in the community. Story & photos by Janet Wallace Keeping elementary students focused on one activity for an hour is a challenge, particularly when they’ve been in classes all morning, yet Sara Liptay succeeds. At Hillsborough Elementary School, 21 students from grades one to three spend every lunch hour learning to play the violin. Sistema-NB, a program of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, was inspired by the highly successful El Sistema initiative in Venezuela. The concept is to create social change through music. Sistema-inspired programs are in sixty countries; Sistema-NB is the largest such program in Canada and one of the largest in North America. The Hillsborough Kiwanis has been serving the youth and seniors of our community since its charter in 1946. We are part of an immense network of clubs known as Kiwanis International. Kiwanis Clubs are located in 80 nations around the world and dedicated to helping their communities in countless ways. Each community’s needs are different, and so, each Kiwanis club is different. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. For many years our local club operated without a centre, but in 1994, Kiwanis built the Hank Braam Kiwanis Centre to fill an identified need in the community. The building now hosts many successful events every year, including fundraisers for both the Kiwanis and other community organizations. As well, it provides a large venue for music shows, weddings and community events. The 150th Celebration Garden planting ceremony was well-attended at the Peace Park in Hillsborough. Those attending included students from the Hillsborough Elementary School, seniors and Brian Keirstead (MLA), Paul Kyle (representing William Henry Steeves Museum), Jeff Jonah (Village of Hillsborough) and Annie Simpson from the Hillsborough Women's Institute (WI), who is 98 years old, and who planted red and white 'flag' tulips along with the rest. The Hiram Creek Trestle on Dawson Settlement Road was originally built in 1875 as part of the Albert County Railway. It was part of the line from Alma to Salisbury. This eventually became part of Canadian National. It has been repaired and rebuilt several times. In 1982 the line between Hillsborough and Baltimore was sold to a preservation group and became the Salem & Hillsborough Railroad. (Picture by Steve Boyko,www.traingeek.ca.) Watch an amazing video that shows trains crossing the trestle, images of the trestle from the 1800s and the demolition of the wooden structure in 2012. Posted on youtube by: David Othen |
