The rink had its beginning somewhere between 1949-1955. The land was used as a lumber yard in the summer and a place to skate in the winter. In 1963, the newly formed recreation council purchased the land from Lenora Martin, and has operated and maintained the facility since then.
In 1981, the rink area was paved and it has been a year-round facility ever since. It is used as a skating rink in the winter, with basketball, roller skating and other activities in the summer, including birthday parties. It is a gathering place for children, youth and adults for all seasons.
The rink plays a major role during Alma’s annual Celebration Days and of course the three-day winter carnival that no one wants to miss. The recreation council operates solely on the funds raised from their Gala evening, bottle redemptions, volunteers and generous donations made by community members. Bottle donations are gladly accepted and can be dropped off at the rink any time throughout the year.
The Recreation Council would like to thank their volunteers, donors and Gala Sponsors for their long-standing and continued support of the community rink. The council is currently looking for ideas/funding support for board and fence repair as well as a new roof. If anyone has ideas, suggestions or money to donate, please contact the Alma Recreation Council on their Facebook page.
