Winter has arrived in Albert County, and we can either complain about it or embrace what it has to offer! If you’re able, manny feel the best way to weather these colder months is to get outside with some friends, so we’ve put together a few ideas on how to pack some healthy enjoyment into the coming months.
For the adventurer, Albert County’s unplowed backwoods roads, dykes, and marshes provide unlimited cross-country skiing opportunities.
Curling – This winter sport is a Canadian tradition second only to hockey and can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. The Fundy Curling Club is looking forward to a busy year. Memberships are open to all and the organization is planning some special nights for first-time curlers to give it a try. Visit the Fundy Curling Club on Facebook or drop by on Friday night and talk to a member about schedules and how you might become involved in the sport.
Skating – The Hillsborough Arena offers adult skating on Tuesdays and Thursdays (10 - 11am) and public skating on Fridays (8 - 9pm), Saturdays (2 - 3pm and 8 - 9pm). Family skating on Sunday (2:15 - 3:15pm). For scheduled times visit the Hillsborough Village website.
Outdoor ice for skating is available (weather permitting) in Riverside-Albert (below the Recreation Center) and at the Alma Rink.
Snowshoeing – Always a great outing, once Mother Nature graces us with a little more of the white stuff. There’s nothing like a couple feet of snow to cover up the bushes and windfalls making winter the perfect time to explore those places that may be inaccessible in summer. You can decide the length and difficulty of the outing based on weather and snow conditions. Bonus: no bugs! Grab a few friends, pack a lunch and your camera, and explore backwoods Albert County.
If you are looking for something more structured, the White Rock recreation area in Hillsborough has 2 marked trails. Check the map at the trailhead on the Golf Course Rd. You can stay in touch with White Rock on Facebook. Want someone to snowshoe with? Just let them know... "Anyone wishing to experience a evening snowshoe hike for an hour or 2 just message us!"
