A Recap of the R. B. Bennett Day Celebration at the Albert County Museum & RB Bennett Commemorative Centre

The Albert County Historical Society, through the “New Horizons for Seniors Program”, was pleased to offer a “bring to life” heritage experience to the community.
The highlight of the 2023 RB Bennett Day celebration was the live theatre heritage drama performance, “Just Between Friends”, provided by professional actors, Thomas Daley and Shawn McCarthy of “Character Matters Production Company,”in Miramichi, NB. The drama script was written specifically for the July 3rd Bennett Day event by the performing actors. Not only did the drama performance provide enjoyable community entertainment, but the audience was provided a memorable experience of learning more about two significant political figures born in New Brunswick.

R.B. Bennett, the 11th Prime Minister of Canada, was born in Hopewell, Albert County. While Sir Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, was from Newcastle. The “on-stage” dramatic conversation between friends, RB Bennett (portrayed by Thomas Daley) and Max Aitken (portrayed by Shawn McCarthy), connected the attentive audience to their personal and political life stories, while showcasing the close friendship they shared for many years.
The Albert County Historical Society was honoured to have Mr. William Herridge, nephew of RB Bennett, attend the 13th Annual R.B. Bennett Day celebration, accompanied by his daughter, Elizabeth Herridge. Following the hearty applause from the audience, Mr. Herridge offered a short and entertaining speech, expressing his pleasure and praise of the performance, with a script that was “historically accurate”!
Refreshments of cake and ice cream, along with much socialization were enjoyed! Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating our rich heritage on our annual RB Bennett Day!
If you have not visited the “RB Bennett Exhibit” which was refurbished in July 2022, please plan to visit the Museum this season!
