The Albert County Winter Carnival will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018 in Hillsborough, NB. This one-day community offers free admission and activities, and other free treats (including hot chocolate, maple taffy, coffee and bottled water). The carnival will feature free horse-drawn wagon rides by Broadleaf Guest Ranch and live entertainment. The event is a cornucopia of indoor and outdoor activities that the organizers like to call Pure Winter Magic!
The event will occur in the center of Hillsborough. The Kiwanis Club and the Visitor Information Centre will provide warm-up zones, public washrooms and activity portals. Skating, snowshoe, and cross country skiing races and the outdoor shinny hockey classic will be part of the festivities. An ice golf putting competition, geocaching adventure and demonstrations by the Fundy Blades Skating Club are also on the agenda.
Everyone is welcome to join in and build a snowman and/or snow sculpture(s). A children’s craft for all ages will be happening at the Hillsborough Public Library. Colouring page contest entries from the local elementary schools will be displayed at the Visitor Information Centre. Family skating on the natural ice surface behind the Visitor Information Centre will also house a bonfire and marshmallow roasting zone.
An outdoor food truck will be located near the Kiwanis Club that will be selling a variety of foods such as Sandwiches, Hamburgers, Deep Fried Mac & Cheese, Poutine, Potato Bomber Egg Rolls and a Kids Special, plus more!
A vintage Snowmobile Show & Shine display of dozens of antique sleds will be presented by the "Golden Oldies Snowmobile Club" -- a truly spectacular collection of snow machines. Master craftsman Rob Milner of Eternity Chainsaw Carvings will demonstrate the art of carving throughout the day and evening. Raffle baskets will raise funds for the Fundy Blades Skating Club and the Hillsborough Drop-In (tickets will be available on the day of the event at the Kiwanis Club).
The unofficial carnival mascot, Albert the Snowman, “Big Al,” was created by Doran and Ben Milton of Dawson Settlement. The 14-foot-tall creation is located on Main Street in Peace Park.
