![]() by Kelly Taylor Urban/Rural Rides is a volunteer driver service that assists seniors in the area who do not have access to transportation to get to medical appointments. Seniors living in rural communities who do not have family handy and are unable to drive themselves find it difficult, and in some cases, impossible to access the medical care they need. Urban/Rural Rides seeks to fill that gap by offering a safe, affordable option by using volunteer drivers. Volunteers use their own vehicles and are reimbursed $.46/km for the expense of using their vehicle. Volunteers undergo a simple screening process before driving clients to appointments. Becoming a volunteer driver is a great way to give back to your community and to make an impact in a real and tangible way. Many volunteers find that helping others in their community this way enhances their lives as well and often creates new friendships and connections within the community. If you would like to volunteer as a driver and help change lives one ride at a time, please call 506-962-3073 or visit http://urbanruralrides.ca for more information. Words from Riverside-Albert Volunteer Fire Department "Behind every man stands a great woman." In the department, Teresa is the lady behind the scenes helping keep things in order as the Secretary/Treasurer of our fundraiser funds, assisting on medical calls when she is not on shift at Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB), first aid training officer for our team for over 30 years, and is always looking out for the welfare of our team. She puts her heart and soul back into her community through her work and experience as a paramedic. Our community members always know they can call on her for medical assistance. No matter the time of day she will always answer their call. When families are doing at-home hospice care, she will check in with the family, sit with them at the end and help through the process in any way she can. Teresa O'Hara will always be a valued member of our department and community. She always goes above and beyond the call of duty and expects nothing in return. ![]() Christmas Market at the Old Church Farmers Market Dec. 3rd & 4th 9am-3pm Visit your favorite vendors at the Market one last time this year at our annual Christmas Market. For months now seniors have been entering a new reality. For some, it's a release because they can go back to their daily routine. For others, the situation causes even more anxiety, in particular because it is difficult to respect physical distancing. Now many seniors are getting out and quietly resuming their old lives. Many were able to resume their activities - meeting at the 50+ clubs, playing cards, visiting family and friends (especially in nursing homes), going to the grocery store or pharmacy, and participating in social activities. Unfortunately, many people don't feel like being exposed to too many others at a time. They accept visits, but prefer to be in small groups only. Also, even though the restrictions have been lifted, not everyone is comfortable going on extended outings in public. This is somewhat the situation experienced by the 50+ clubs in the province. Many have reopened their doors and resumed their activities, dinners and card games, while others are still fearful of gatherings. We are hopeful that everything can return to normal soon. Our seniors are so in need of socialization, especially after all the isolation of the pandemic. ![]() The first person to be nominated for our Person of the Month column is Jeff Cooke. Jeff and his wife, Tracy, are the owners of Cooke’s Quik Mart and the Hillsborough Irving gas station. Jeff has been nominated for this column by Don Bowman. Here is what Don had to share about Jeff: Jeff is one of the friendliest people you could have the opportunity to know or meet. He is all about community and treats the people of Albert County as royalty. People ask him to support their fundraisers or local groups and before they finish their requests he is already preparing to do so. by Dawne McLean

Albert County Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards![]() by Amanda Rossiter On May 14, 2022, for the first time since Covid started, the Albert County Chamber of Commerce was able to hold its 5th Annual Business Excellence Awards live and in person at the Broadleaf Ranch. It was an exceptional event to be invited to and take part in. The dining room was beautifully decorated, the Chamber of Commerce Directors were fabulous hosts, the food was exceptional. The evening’s theme was The Albert County Transformation and highlighted the wonderful ways the Albert County businesses were able to work together and support each other over the last two years. The business owners have emerged on the other side of Covid stronger, determined and ready to move ahead towards the next opportunities that the change and challenge have brought them. In the case of COVID-19, I hope we can strengthen ties within our villages and region even while we remain physically isolated. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful and peaceful area where many people are resilient and self-sufficient. We have gone through long power outages and major winter storms and came out smiling. Many residents have pantries full of food and know how to prepare meals from scratch. In rural Albert County, we can self-isolate but still walk on a beach, hike in a forest or just sit outside and appreciate the sounds and sights of spring. We don’t need to go out to events to be entertained. The Albert County League of Gamers is a Facebook group that has been

Organizations across Fundy Royal are creating opportunities for seniors to continue to make significant and valuable contributions to their families, communities and country. However, there can be barriers for seniors to access these programs and opportunities. The Albert County Museum and Tele-Drive Albert County recognized these issues in the Albert County area and are working together to ensure seniors in the area can access their programming. Using business as a force for good isn’t just an idea. It’s a move-ment that’s happening across the country and around the world. Companies everywhere are retooling their mission and vision statements, and updating their business plans to reflect values that put people and the environment first. ![]() By Mark Nelson The 2018/2019 season was a great success for Hillsborough Huskies Hockey. While we were fortunate to have one Midget team make it all the way to the provincial semi-finals, numerous tournament wins and seven great teams of Huskies, a lot of us involved with the association would say our crowning moment of the season came at the end of the Finals of the Joe Lamontagne Tournament in Cole Harbour, NS, where our two midget teams squared off. by Barb Gebuhr
Chipoudy Communities Revitalization Committee (CCRC) was conceived in 2013, and became formally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2014. With the vision of supporting economic and social growth of the area from Hopewell Cape Rocks to Fundy Park, various fundraisers were held in the early months. Borrowing from the experience in Nova Scotia, CCRC partnered with the Fundy Curling Club to offer Chase the Ace every Friday night. The idea soon caught on and the excitement was contagious. With money shared among the Curling Club, CCRC, the ticket winner and the jackpot, it was a natural money-maker for this area. With Stephen Land acting as Chef, people were able to enjoy a delicious meal along with playing for luck.
