2024 Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign

If you have not yet seen it, the symbol of Remembrance Day - the POPPY - will be evident throughout your community soon. Local businesses will be partnering with the Legion to offer Poppy pins for you to purchase and display on your lapels. This gesture reflects our gratitude to those who have served in both World Wars, Afghanistan, Peace Keepers, and our active Armed Forces.

As well as Poppy pins, crosses and wreaths can be purchased in memory of beloved veterans. Call the Legion at 506 734 2289 on Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday to place your order or for further information.

Rising Tides, Trails, & Tunes

Experience the vibrant spirit of the Rising Tide, Trails & Tunes Festival while celebrating local
art, culture, music, food and nature. You can submerge yourself in a lively series of events
happening from October 5th to the 14th, 2024. This long-running festival will unfold across
three diverse and artistic landscapes that surround Fundy National Park.

Notice of Drone Geophysical Survey

Please note that remotely piloted aircraft or drone operations will be conducted in your area by Canada Future Metals. The goal of these operations is to collect, through scientific instruments the geophysical properties (conductive/resistive/magnetic) of sedimentary formations of the bedrock. This scientific tool (VLF EM- very low frequency electromagnetic) does not collect any photographic information, only a measurement of the natural VLF properties of rock drone and instruments.

Mission Date(s)
Operations are planned to occur from 1st October to 7th October. However, if weather conditions are not optimal for safe operations, the survey would commence after this date during October when it is safe to do so.

The Riverside Albert Volunteer Fire Department and Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Department are pleased to be a part of the NB Firefighter/Pompiers 50/50. Tickets can now be purchased in support of these departments at www.nb5050.ca. When you specify which department you are supporting, a portion of the sales goes to that department. Don't forget to buy early in time to get in on the early bird draw. 

A Note from the Editor

For the last couple of years I have had the pleasure of serving as the part-time editor of this Connecting Albert County Newsletter. It has been an interesting endeavor in my life and I have learned a great deal by partaking in this role. At this time, my children’s activities, and my own full time career, have to take priority and I can no longer give this newsletter the time that it takes to provide a proper recurring edition. I have decided to step away from the newsletter and this will be my final solo edition. The incoming editor will do an excellent job with it and I look forward to seeing what she has planned for future editions.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me to produce this over the last couple years. I’ve met some amazing people, and learned an incredible amount about what is offered and what is happening in our area. I also want to thank the incredible volunteers, from proofreaders to website posters, from writers to board members and everyone in between. You are all amazing and CAC is lucky to have you all.

Thank you again for subscribing and supporting this newsletter. I hope you will continue to do so and I look forward to what comes next for CAC!!!

Chipoudy Communities Revitalization Committee and Friends of Fundy have planned the next community meeting regarding the 114 and 915 Crossroads Corner in Riverside-Albert including the Old Bank of New Brunswick, and Anderson Hollow Lighthouse. The meeting will be held at the Lower Level of the Riverside-Albert Rec Centre on Thursday, July 4th at 7pm.

News from the New Brunswick Senior Citizens’ Federation

The board of directors had its first meeting of the year on Thursday, February 1st (which had to be postponed from January 25th due to a death in the president's family). We have two new members: Laureena Black (Miramichi Zone President) and Doug Rowlands (Loyalist Zone President for the Saint John region).
Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in Moncton at the Legends Room of the Moncton Coliseum (377 Killam Drive, Entrance C at the rear of the Coliseum) from 10 am to 5 pm (doors will open at 9 am). Registration forms should be sent to the clubs shortly. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided by JCB Interpretation Inc. and Sonic-Image. A coffee break and lunch will be offered.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 - Hillsborough NB Elects 2024 Executive Members

This past January, the 2024 Executive Members were sworn in for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 - Hillsborough NB (pictured below). The main mission of the Legion is to provide support for veterans and their families in Albert County. Your generous support during the Poppy Campaign, leading up to Remembrance Day, greatly aids in the success of this mission. Thank you very much.

As well, the Legion is a responsible community citizen - supporting graduates with bursaries, supporting the local Navy League Cadets and Sea Cadets with funds, and most importantly organizing Remembrance Day events.

Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join or visit the Legion. It is located at 31 Legion Street in Hillsborough. The Legion - Ship’s Landing Lounge is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 2 pm to 10 pm. Drop in and learn more about the Legion and the many benefits of becoming a member.

Volunteer at Forest Dale

The winter months are on their way out and spring is on the horizon! Are you itching to get moving, get out of the house, and looking for something fulfilling to do? Forest Dale Nursing Home has an amazing opportunity to give back to seniors in our community through their volunteer program. Social connection and interaction benefit not only the residents, but the staff and volunteers themselves. Volunteers contribute to a vibrant and connected nursing home community. As one volunteer said, "We feel the more volunteers that are in the home, the more residents will still feel part of their community. The community where many of them spent their lives working, raising families, and even volunteering themselves". Human connection keeps us healthy, happy and fulfilled.

There are many activities offered at Forest Dale Nursing home, including: walking programs, Bingo, bowling/curling, baking, music events, special events etc. Or maybe you have an idea or something you are passionate about that you would like to share with the residents! Maybe you’d be interested in running a crochet/knit club, gardening club, card games, art club, the possibilities are endless!

Forest Dale has a keen interest in opportunities for intergenerational activities as well! Bring your kiddos and bring your babes and do friendly visits. We also love to see well behaved pets come in with their owners!

February Frolic Review

The 2024 February Frolic brought over a week of celebrating art, food, and nature! From stargazing to ice skating there was no shortage of things to do in Fundy Albert. We want to give a HUGE thanks to local community groups and businesses that hosted activities during the Frolic, the Village for partnering for both logistics and programming, and to everyone that came out to the events! Special thanks to the Government of New Brunswick’s Environmental Trust Fund for the support in awareness and education on Birds Species at Risk, Pollinators, and Dark Skies. We were able to host events like stargazing, art workshops, and our own Great Backyard Bird Count.

The Albert County Historical Society presented a Heritage “Valentine Social” as a New Horizons for Seniors Program February 9th during the Riverview Winter Carnival

The “Valentine Social” was a fun-filled afternoon with over 40 Seniors and Adults deciphering a “Valensign” love letter of 1857, learning “Love Lessons from Old Valentines”, hearing the history of creating Valentines through the centuries, participating in activities with prizes ~ finding Valentine Puzzle Pairs and naming the Love Song. The sharing of Valentine’s Day memories was enjoyed by everyone. The event ended sweetly ~ socializing and savouring delicious treats!

ACHS Directors, Sharon McIntyre and Dawne McLean, displayed Vintage Valentines and decorative Heart Chocolate Boxes as part of their “Valentine Social” program.

Fundy Albert Businesses and Community Organizations are planning lots of ways to connect with nature!

Join Cliff Valley Astronomy and Parks Canada to explore and learn about the importance of Dark Sky Preserves;
Get a head start on your garden planning at Seedy Saturday at the Hillsborough Market;
Have a peek into the musical world of birds and their songs with Jesse Mea’s Interactive Nature Sound Exhibit and concert;
Do a little bird watching yourself with a guided hike for the Great Backyard Bird Count after a Birders Breakfast hosted by the Maplegrove Inn;
Broadleaf Ranch has two days packed full of activities and workshops;
Maplegrove Inn is hosting Valentine’s Day Teas;
Farmer Brown’s Greenhouse has a weekend of outdoor activities;
Hope-Wellness Eco-Resort has a wonderful romantic Valentines’s Day package.

Plus there are art workshops throughout the week, plenty of curling and Chase the Ace at the Fundy Curling Club, and a sliding at the bowl in Fundy National Park to wrap up the Frolic!

Help us, help others! Urban/Rural Ride Drivers needed

Urban/Rural Rides provides transportation to seniors and low-income families for medical appointments and food bank access. As the demand for service continues to grow throughout Southeast New Brunswick, the need to add more amazing volunteers to the team continues to be essential in supporting transportation requests. The goal is to make sure everyone who lacks transportation to appointments because they cannot drive, do not have a vehicle, and/or do not have family or neighbors who can assist them can find a friendly helping hand from a volunteer driver.

If you have a few hours a week to extend an act of kindness by driving someone to an appointment, please contact us. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed $.50/km as well as receive other community incentives.

Transportation is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To request a drive, please call us at 506-962-3073 or visit us online at http://www.urbanruralrides.ca for more information or to volunteer.

On behalf of the Albert County Historical Society and Museum, I wish to extend a “Grateful Thanks” for the support received during the past year from society members, community organizations, businesses, volunteers and the amazing “circle of friends” within Albert County and beyond. Special acknowledgement of thanks to all levels of government, the Federal Government of Canada, the Government of New Brunswick, and the Municipality of Fundy Albert, for their support of the New Horizons for Seniors Program projects, the employment of seasonal staff, heritage projects, exhibits and commemorative events enjoyed by community residents and visitors. May your Christmas be filled with magical moments to be remembered, the warmth of friendship and love of family!

Albert County Resident Receives Award of Merit

Dawne McLean, long serving active member and current President of the Albert County Historical Society, is shown above receiving her Award of Merit presented for her outstanding contribution to heritage by Association Heritage New Brunswick President Gerry Gillcash at the Annual AHNB Conference Banquet November 9th.

A retired teacher, Dawne has held a lifelong passion for educating and sharing the rich history of Albert County as evidenced by her 17 year service as Coordinator for School Regional Heritage Fairs and the 2022 ACHS publication, “A Glimpse of Past Days” - a compilation by Dawne of Albert County heritage memories, photographs and stories.

Dawne’s strong advocacy for the repairs of Sawmill Creek Bridge and the initiation of the Annual “Love Your Covered Bridge Day” celebrations resulted in the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers 2023 selection of Sawmill Creek Bridge as the official plaque site for covered bridges as a historical structure designation.

For her extensive contributions to the community, Dawne was also a recipient of The Molly Kool Award (2018) and the QE II Silver (2012) and Platinum (2023) Jubilee Medals and is a frequent writer for “Connecting Albert County.”

The New Brunswick Senior Citizens’ Federation President, Percy Huntington, Government Relations Committee Chair, Jim Hanley, and committee members, Mary Ann Rowlands and Dorothy Brown, met with the Minister of Health Bruce Fitch, Deputy Minister Eric Beaulieu and his Executive Assistant, Robert Weir on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023. The NBSCF representatives appreciated the fact that the government representatives were very receptive and accommodating. They were able to discuss all of the resolutions presented by the Federation that pertained to health.
