At the time of printing/posting, Forest Dale Home is following the Public Health directive to “remain closed for indoor, outdoor and off-site visits.” The activity department is working to set up virtual visits and old-fashioned phone calls. We are not permitting any non-essential people to come into the building, but some volunteers are visiting residents through their windows. This creates great excitement for everyone.

She announced funding in the amount of $25,350 to the Albert County Historical Society Incorporated for their community project Growing Together: Seeds from the past; seeds for the future. She made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. "Canada 150 is a defining moment in the history of our people and the Albert County Historical Society has found a home grown way to celebrate!," said Alaina Lockhart. "Through the Growing Together project, Canadians of all ages will share their stories about their family gardens and the foods they have enjoyed for generations. Our gardening traditions offer such a unique perspective on our local culture; one we should be proud to share during this year of celebrations.” (Image of Alaina Lockhart provided by David Christie.) Story and photos by Deborah Carr All ages came out on Friday to play, eat, socialize and help Hillsborough celebrate the Canada Day weekend. The Artisan Village at the Wetlands Park officially opened. Then at noon, Hillsborough’s newest residents from Aleppo, Syria, - Mohammad and Montaha Khalaf and their children Rodaina, Ahmed, Alaa and Wissam - helped cut the cake at the Steeves House Museum. It was a very special moment for all and a heartfelt gesture of welcome and acknowledgement that they are now part of our local history. By Susan A. Dean A new business is brewing in Alma. Peter and Jeff Grandy, brothers from Charlottetown, PEI, are converting the former (decommissioned) St. Stephen’s United Church into the Holy Whale Brewery and Buddha Bear Café. Jeff attended the Brew Master program at Olds College in Alberta and Peter is a mechanical engineer. They both bring many years of brewing experience to their business, along with their own brand of on-site roasted coffee. Canada Day in rural Albert County, NB, is a time to celebrate. Check out some or all the events on July 1st, 2016.
The People's Alliance held a town hall in Hillsborough on June 9th, 2016. Despite the wet weather over forty people were in attendance. Party Leader Kris Austin spoke on a wide range of issues. Kris Austin began by outlining the party's history and efforts to promote itself. After asking for a show of hands of who had heard of the People's Alliance before hearing about the town hall nearly every hand went up. Kris compared this to earlier years when two hands might go up. Moving on to issues of policy Kris bemoaned the poor state of democracy in New Brunswick. "We need to get back to representing the people first and the party second", he said. This past winter, a team made up of folks from your local communities, got together to furnish an apartment for a Syrian family seeking a new life in Canada. We have completed the task. The beds are made, closets have the basics, kitchen cupboards are full and bikes are ready to roll! We expect a call soon! As our family of six await their final travel papers, our communities need to pull together one more team. We are looking for people to help this new family with the transition from a tented refugee camp to an English rural community. With spring finally here, many of us have been itching to get outside and gardening in the nice fresh air. Well, wait no more, because there is going to be a NEW Community Garden opening this week, right here in Riverside Albert! Foods of the Fundy Valley, Forest Dale Home and the Shepody Food Bank have all partnered to build our very own shared garden. Forest Dale has graciously provided the space, water and other support for the garden and will have one of the plots to grow food for the home and as an outdoor activity space for the seniors, staff, volunteers, and family who come to visit their loved ones. The Shepody Food Bank generously helped by writing a successful grant to fund the building of the garden and will also have their own plot for anyone in the community to come and care for, and eat freely from, bringing any extra produce back to the Food Bank for the families and other people that they serve. Foods of the Fundy Valley is providing Elizabeth Gorman’s Program Coordinator time to organize the build and the running of the garden this season. Each plot will measure approximately 10ft x 10ft. Out of these 10 plots, there will be 8 available for anyone who would like to rent one for the year. Our vision for the garden is for it to be a space where people can have fun gardening together - with the soil already tilled and ready to go, tools provided, and workshops throughout the summer and fall season. We also see it as becoming a beautiful green resting and gathering space for anyone who would like to just simply spend time in the garden relaxing, maybe taking a break from work or life in general, and as a space for others to host events and gather. If you or someone you know is interested in signing up for a plot, please visit or call Mindy Holmstrom at the Forest Dale Nursing Home, 882-3015 or contact Elizabeth at foodsofthefundyvalley@gmail.com, or at 875-5841. The only cost is a yearly fee of 15$ (or pay what you can) to help cover future costs for soil amendments, etc., in 2017. Alma

Last year’s tournament was a huge success which raised over $9,000. The funds are used “to enhance the health and wellness of the people served by the Albert County Health and Wellness Centre through raising funds and managing assets in the spirit of our benefactor, Judge Bennett’s vision.” For example, the Bennett and Albert County Health Care (BACH) Foundation raises funds to help the Albert County Health and Wellness Centre. BACH has financed the Telehealth and TeleHomeCare programs, as well as purchasing new equipment, including X-ray and digital imaging equipment. The BACH Foundation also supports many great community initiatives including Tele-Drive Albert County, Literacy Express, the Imagination Library, spin bikes in classrooms, and Connecting Albert County. The Council of the Village of Hillsborough would like to present 'An Artisan’s Village'. The Hillsborough Village Council members are excited to announce the plans for a location for local vendors in Hillsborough. There will be five colourful buildings available for rent, located on Steeves Street, overlooking the wetlands park. This will be an ideal location for an artisan to set-up shop & display their wares to locals and tourists alike. The shops will be open 7 days a week, beginning July 1st to Labour Day weekend in September from 10 AM to 6 PM. In future years, buildings may open earlier in the season. The buildings provided will be a clear slate for you to set-up shop! Other than hydro, the rest is up to you. (tables, racking, etc.) |
