This month's recipient of Community business of the month is the Alma Fleet Launch.
Although the Alma Fleet Launch is not a single business as it comprises many proud fishermen, their families and the community, we should take a moment to celebrate this event.
The Fleet Launch marks the beginning of the Alma-based fleet’s permission to enter the Bay of Fundy to start the fall lobster season. This event started in October and runs until December 31st. We wish all the fishermen the best for a safe and prosperous season.
The fleet consists of about 10 local fishermen and others, who call Alma their home, join in as the season progresses. This huge undertaking involves many hours of hard cold labor with baiting traps, setting or lowering them into the Bay, retrieving them a few days later, and sorting to insure only lobsters of minimum size are kept. Once all is complete, the traps are re-baited and the whole cycle starts again. These vessels have a captain and three crew members to complete all the tasks required for the two plus months and each earns a share of the catch based on how many lobsters are caught.
Being many decades old the Alma Fleet Launch has always been a time-honored event celebrated by local lobstermen and women and has served to build strength in the entire Alma community. For the last 10 years, the Alma Fleet Launch’s excitement has been shared and continues to grow, having many community- supported events for local families and visitors to enjoy while learning more about the lobster trade. Having fireworks, live bands and many other activities while crews and family prepare for the season is truly a special time and feeling.
Alma’s entire community is very open and welcoming to all to see, enjoy and be part of the lobstering celebration.
