CAC Political Forum 2019- Guaranteed Income

24/9/2019

We asked readers "What matters to you in the upcoming federal election?" We sent the questions to all candidates running on Sept. 11 and have printed their responses, unedited, in the order we received them. We did not receive responses from Rudolf Neumayer, People's Party of Canada, or Daniel Patrick Grogan, Rhinoceros Party.

What is your party’s position on guaranteed annual income as a means to reduce poverty?
Tim Thompson, Green Party of Canada: Unlike the other parties, the Greens do not support big corporate welfare and loopholes that allow the wealthy to dodge taxes and collect government handouts. We believe the wealthy should pay their fair share of taxes, and that money should be used to help hardworking Canadians get ahead. We support a guaranteed basic income that will lift people out of poverty and put them back to work. A basic income creates more jobs and boosts local economies. We know that New Brunswickers are hardworking people, and a guaranteed basic income would allow people to meet their basic needs while putting money back into local economies, rather than the pockets of wealthy transnational corporations.

Rob Moore, Conservative Party of Canada: We provide a guaranteed annual income to seniors in Canada through the Guaranteed Income Supplement and Old Age Security. Our plan to help New Brunswickers get ahead is to lower taxes, scrap the carbon tax, take the GST off home heating and make parental leave benefits tax free. For working age people, we need to let people keep more of the money they earn. We also need to encourage job creation and invest in infrastructure so employment is available in our region.

John Evans, National Citizens Alliance: First and foremost, poverty will never be totally eradicated from the earth. NCA identifies five (5) core areas of poverty. Pertaining to federal jurisdiction. 1) Aboriginal Affairs 2) Child Care 3) Income (including annual income, minimum wage, welfare and related taxation) 4) Food insecurity 5) Social Services (including immigration/integration services). NCA has a number of policies such as Employment, Economic Growth, Health Care and Food security that overlap the issue of poverty. NCA believes equal and fairness for all Canadians and ensuring middle- and lower-income individuals and families have equal and fair opportunity.

Alaina Lockhart, Liberal Party of Canada: I believe that all Canadians want to see poverty eradicated in our communities. It is something we have taken concrete action on over the past four years with policies to improve the quality of life for Canadians at all stages of life. These policies and benefits are all part of Canada’s first ever National Poverty Reduction Strategy that includes the Canada Child Benefit, the strengthening of CPP, GIS and OAS and the Canada Workers Benefit. These investments have already cut poverty rates in half helping lift more than 825,000 Canadians out of poverty including 31,000 New Brunswickers. We know there is still more work to do and are committed to staying focused on investments in Canadians so that everyone has a fair chance of success.

Need I say that I found this interesting for obvious reasons

Daniel Patrick Grogan, Rhinoceros Party is even on the ballot yet but clearly I am

As I stated in the introduction, the questions were sent to all candidates running at that time. Due to our publishing schedule, we could not wait until October 2nd, the date when the complete list of candidates will be published. We needed to have enough time for candidates to respond and for us to do the layout of our print publication. As you might see in our other posts, we published two other questions in our August issue - and these were answered by the candidates who were confirmed as of mid-July.

Nobody can be confirmed until after the writ was dropped this month

However the lawyer Rob Moore should admit that I first ran against him in 2004 and I have always been excluded from all debates etc east of Sussex for political reasons of that I have no doubt.

To be clear, I would have been happy to answer any and all questions. But I never received any communications from connectingalbertcounty.org until this morning concerning a post. If you could provide those question, I will respond.

Hi Rudolph,
We couldn't find a personal email address for you as there was no website on the Elections Canada website. Instead, we sent a message to you via Facebook and to your party's email address care of you. Feel free to reply to the four questions in the comment section below each question (you can find them all on our news page).

Rudolf

Not having seen what measures were taken on your end, I cannot comment on those. What I can say is there is no message on Facebook and other messages from local media have been passed along to me from the PPC HQ.

I will also say that David Amos contacted me 2 days after Elections Canada posted my candidacy. That was in July. There also is direct contact links to my twitter and facebook accounts on the PPC website. Not to mention that I am all of a sudden on the email chain.

As it stands now the damage is done. It now looks like I am not engaged of that I am aloof to the concerns of the community.

My responses to the questions will come later as I am occupied presently.

Hi Rudolph,
A message was sent to your Facebook account at 2:13pm on Sept 11, 2019. A second message was sent to [email protected] on 6:01pm on Sept. 12, 2019. Both contained the questions and other information.

Obviously you were not invited to the fancy dinner either

Surprise Surprise Surprise

BTW I have been commenting about your leader and Fundy Royal for the past day or so in CBC

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/candidates-ridings-nomination-election-1.5298149

CBC blocks a lot of comments of mine for Trudeau's benefit (They used to do the same for Harper) so I post them all in my blog as per my MO and I also tweet about everything including this malicious nonsense

https://davidraymondamos3.blogspot.com/2019/09/berniers-ppc-now-only-national-party.html

That said trust that anyone can Google my name and find my Twitter account just like Moore and Lockhart and their many minions do Of that I have no doubt

Rudy Neumayer People's Party Canadidate Fundy Royal

The People’s Party is founded on the principles of Respect, Freedom, Personal responsibility and Fairness. While on the surface a universal basic income sounds fair, it is not and it does not encourage personal responsibility and will ultimately end up in a loss of freedom.

Above you see the Conservatives and the Liberals ignoring the question entirely and redirecting you to existing programs. They do not want to tell you no. They want to get you to focus on what is taken from Canadians and redistributed back to Canadians and pretend they did something for you. They didn’t. What they outlined is, in many cases, overlapping programs. Each of those programs needs to be administered by bureaucracies at a great cost to Canadians. It is all paid for by you, the taxpayer.

The concept of a Universal Basic Income is not really new. It has been tried in many socialist countries. Socialism has failed every time it has been tried, everywhere it has been tried. The latest example is Venezuela where food has become so scarce their pets have become food. And if you think you pay too much tax now, imagine how much it will be after this wealth redistribution scheme.

The place for government in society is to set the playing field to be fair. It should create the framework for an economy where people may succeed and prosper when they put in the effort, where taxes do not stifle growth and where the government does not intercede in the market with grants, tax breaks, subsidies or any other form of corporate welfare.

The People’s Party therefore is against a universal basic income and will implement income tax reform where incomes up to 15,000 is tax free, 15,000 to 100,000 is taxed at 15% and anything over is taxed at 25%. We will cut corporate welfare completely cancel the carbon tax. We will also pull out of the Paris Agreement so that no carbon tax gets levied on Canadian business to their detriment in world markets.
